Heat from me. If you're up on a mountain, off the main tracks and your phone battery dies, reading a map could be the difference between life and death, that's not an exaggeration. Sat nav is useless on a mountain and google maps isn't that much better.
If you do a lot of hill walking then knowing how to use a map and compass is a life saver.

Map reading and navigation are life skills being rapidly lost. Anyone who needs phone or sat nav to find their way in the countryside is seriously lacking in abilities and common sense. Google maps and similar are for or roads and motorways.

its also a life saver if you mountain bike a lot and again your phone die's. its a basic skill that's very useful.

Good refresher course for me. I don't rely on batteries for anything! Navigation is part of the fun. Thanks for posting.
