What would be better this or the i7 laptop from earlier

This would be better for gaming, but the laptop earlier was a far better deal.
This seems a better deal for the price. RX 480 is comparable with the GTX 1060.

Any comments on this, I'm getting rather confused with all the spec lists and these deals flying around?

The one I linked to has a faster i5, an additional 128GB SSD and better GPU. The rx 480 benchmarks higher than the 970.

Thank you very much, and too all of you who replied. May I ask does anyone think I'd be able to do any better today if I bump up my budget (to say 700)? I'm rocking a self build cerca 2007 with an ssd upgrade atm with a Gigabyte GTX 460 Super OverClock Edition 1GB card.

I mean, it's not likely - but the best thing you could potentially do is build something fresh and just not worry about the budget (obviously, but that doesn't work for everyone).
But, the second best thing you can do is buy the RX480 build, sell the RX480 and buy a better GPU like a 1070 or 1080 with the remainder of your budget, that'll give you the biggest increase in perf.

The one with the RX480 is the better deal.

Personally think that's a better deal with an SSD.

It might be a better deal on paper for sure, but in real life things might be little different! First of all that low wattage psu will work over his limits once system will be fully stressed(when gaming, or doing any other heavy tasks). Graphics card rx480 4GB have a slight edge over gtx 970 but only under certain conditions, which most likely will be unachievable is such small case, where is limited ventilation and psu that will most likely generate to much heat working near his limits.

The only issue with this build is that 300W PSU... if only it was 500W.

I wouldn't use HP for gaming, neither AMD. My opinion.

HP is just the assembler. Can I ask why you wouldn't use AMD? Their top products are on par with Intel and are usually cheaper

970 is a solid card
Only game mine has struggled with is warhammer totalwar 2 after all these years.
this PC is a bargain but the CPU is a bit weak

just remember that being a desktop individual components are replaceable/up-gradable at anytime you like, so for now this is ok for games in a year or two it could still be upgraded to be ok.

Not really worth upgrading this to anything its basically at its limits now...
The CPU is already bottlenecking the GPU, to upgrade this would be to replace everything inside the case lol
This PC is good for a gamer who doesnt mind turning a few settings down, It is older hardware but still has enough grunt to get the most out of most the new games, just dont expect wonders on RTS games or Demanding AAA games.
The guy upgrading from a 470 build this will be amazing for you, specially for the price.

Oh that's really helpful thank you very much. Can I be really cheeky would this thing be able to run the hardware for that star trek vr game? If I get the headset obviously? My daughter is bugging me about it.

I wouldnt buy this for VR its too weak, VR is very demanding, not sure if the star trek game is but spending all that for 1 game is not really worth it. I think the star trek game is not as demanding as others but the 970 is kinda weak for VR anyway and the CPU not allowing the 970 to fully stretch its wings just wont be worth it, so id say avoid if you want a good experience.
Also the star trek game is really short, its not like a full game i dont think? Ive watched a few streamers play it and its very small, not worth £700 investment lol.

Thanks for that it's very helpful. Just to clarify was going for the AMD Radeon RX-480 build linked above. It wouldn't be just for that game, but it was a perk if it would run it :-P.

For the record, he is wrong saying that your CPU would be bottlenecked.

If you did as previously mentioned and upgraded the graphics card to a 1070 it should be ok for the star trek game.
For Bridge Crew the minimum requirements are as follows, though you definitely want to aim beyond and take the "minimum" with a pinch of salt for VR games;
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
Processor: Intel® i5-4590, AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better
Thank you very much. Really appreciate all the help.

In my defence it's because I always thoroughly search before doing so. I'm not asking for anyone to sell me anything I'm just explaining why I haven't posted. Although why I'm doing that I'm now wondering... *blinks*

Would this be any good with 1080p (or ideally 4k) video editing? I am trying to use Adobe. Premier Pro to edit some movies and create special effects etc and my old PC is struggling.
