Is the i5-6400 still a good CPU?

Yer it only released in late 2015 I think. There are better CPU's around now. But this CPU is fine for gaming.

Cool thanks.
I think I'm gonna order this one, £500 with those specs plus Windows 10 is a real bargain

there is very little difference in the performance of i5s since the 2500 series
best value is to buy a refurb i5 2500 on ebay and get a decent gpu like rx 470 or gtx 460. this pc is great though agree with the rx480 link

Hello, novice here. I'm just looking for a cheap gaming PC to plug into the TV in the dining area. Not looking top-end, it's just a 1080p TV. Will this do a decent job at 1080/60 gaming? Is there much upgrade potential?

Nowt like a HUKD gaming pc thread for showing how little people actually know about playing games.
Both this system and the one linked above will play ALL current games unless you want 'ultra' * or some exotic resolution.
End of.
* ultra setting are for plebs, play the game not the graphics.

Most people want to buy a PC to last a while not just be ok with games today on medium, my old pc with a gtx460 will play ALL games today. This website is about getting the best bang for your buck also.
The second link is better for rendering, could do with 8 more GB of RAM maybe but I edit on my pc with 8gb of ram no problem. Check to see if the editing software you use has GPU assist or render on GPU, as it will greatly reduce render time which is the only issue that is really a big thing.

No they won't. Not smoothly anyway.

Big hairy dog rollox.
Both of the above PCs will play almost every game at 60+fps. Maybe with the exception of COH2 as the engine is so crap there isn't a computer on the planet that can run it properly.
stelol to abaxas
10 Oct 17#40
60fps isn't exactly smooth like i said. They are very budget gaming rigs and you'd be better off learning a little bit about building and doing it yourself but anyway, i'm not here to argue just giving my 2 cents.

Almost everyone 'games' on a 60hz display. Some people do run higher refresh rates but they are a very very very very small minority.
Noting that is you want the lowest lag and are not gaming on a CRT, you are talking out of your arse :P
This seems a better deal for the price. RX 480 is comparable with the GTX 1060.

Any comments on this, I'm getting rather confused with all the spec lists and these deals flying around?

The one I linked to has a faster i5, an additional 128GB SSD and better GPU. The rx 480 benchmarks higher than the 970.

Thank you very much, and too all of you who replied. May I ask does anyone think I'd be able to do any better today if I bump up my budget (to say 700)? I'm rocking a self build cerca 2007 with an ssd upgrade atm with a Gigabyte GTX 460 Super OverClock Edition 1GB card.

I mean, it's not likely - but the best thing you could potentially do is build something fresh and just not worry about the budget (obviously, but that doesn't work for everyone).
But, the second best thing you can do is buy the RX480 build, sell the RX480 and buy a better GPU like a 1070 or 1080 with the remainder of your budget, that'll give you the biggest increase in perf.

The one with the RX480 is the better deal.

It might be a better deal on paper for sure, but in real life things might be little different! First of all that low wattage psu will work over his limits once system will be fully stressed(when gaming, or doing any other heavy tasks). Graphics card rx480 4GB have a slight edge over gtx 970 but only under certain conditions, which most likely will be unachievable is such small case, where is limited ventilation and psu that will most likely generate to much heat working near his limits.

The only issue with this build is that 300W PSU... if only it was 500W.

I wouldn't use HP for gaming, neither AMD. My opinion.

HP is just the assembler. Can I ask why you wouldn't use AMD? Their top products are on par with Intel and are usually cheaper

10 Oct 17#42
Just to give a bit of an idea how much a system compareable to this would cost if you was to build your self.
For the most part I stuck with the cheapest possible except for the case and PSU. £589 total price that is without windows or a mouse and keyboard. Add an extra £20 for the mouse and keyboard and windows. Buying this would save you a little over £100.
I could only find one 970 brand new for £225 which is a rip of. You might as well get a 1060 for the same price. The 1060 is about 15% faster than a 970.
Very good deal. The 970 is a little old now but still great for 1080p gaming.

In my defence it's because I always thoroughly search before doing so. I'm not asking for anyone to sell me anything I'm just explaining why I haven't posted. Although why I'm doing that I'm now wondering... *blinks*

both are quite budget gaming pcs (albeit not bad for the price) and won't really last the test of future titles, you're better off paying a little extra and building your own gaming pc and upgrading along the way. Can't believe they were selling these for over £1000 originally!! Madness

Would this be any good with 1080p (or ideally 4k) video editing? I am trying to use Adobe. Premier Pro to edit some movies and create special effects etc and my old PC is struggling.

just remember that being a desktop individual components are replaceable/up-gradable at anytime you like, so for now this is ok for games in a year or two it could still be upgraded to be ok.

10 Oct 17#15
Not really worth upgrading this to anything its basically at its limits now...
The CPU is already bottlenecking the GPU, to upgrade this would be to replace everything inside the case lol
This PC is good for a gamer who doesnt mind turning a few settings down, It is older hardware but still has enough grunt to get the most out of most the new games, just dont expect wonders on RTS games or Demanding AAA games.
The guy upgrading from a 470 build this will be amazing for you, specially for the price.

Oh that's really helpful thank you very much. Can I be really cheeky would this thing be able to run the hardware for that star trek vr game? If I get the headset obviously? My daughter is bugging me about it.
seanmorris100 to chezybezy
10 Oct 17#17
I wouldnt buy this for VR its too weak, VR is very demanding, not sure if the star trek game is but spending all that for 1 game is not really worth it. I think the star trek game is not as demanding as others but the 970 is kinda weak for VR anyway and the CPU not allowing the 970 to fully stretch its wings just wont be worth it, so id say avoid if you want a good experience.
Also the star trek game is really short, its not like a full game i dont think? Ive watched a few streamers play it and its very small, not worth £700 investment lol.

10 Oct 17#18
Thanks for that it's very helpful. Just to clarify was going for the AMD Radeon RX-480 build linked above. It wouldn't be just for that game, but it was a perk if it would run it :-P.

For the record, he is wrong saying that your CPU would be bottlenecked.

If you did as previously mentioned and upgraded the graphics card to a 1070 it should be ok for the star trek game.
For Bridge Crew the minimum requirements are as follows, though you definitely want to aim beyond and take the "minimum" with a pinch of salt for VR games;
