Heat from me. If you're up on a mountain, off the main tracks and your phone battery dies, reading a map could be the difference between life and death, that's not an exaggeration. Sat nav is useless on a mountain and google maps isn't that much better.
If you do a lot of hill walking then knowing how to use a map and compass is a life saver.

Map reading and navigation are life skills being rapidly lost. Anyone who needs phone or sat nav to find their way in the countryside is seriously lacking in abilities and common sense. Google maps and similar are for or roads and motorways.

its also a life saver if you mountain bike a lot and again your phone die's. its a basic skill that's very useful.

They serve two different sets of objectives (with an overlap).

Good refresher course for me. I don't rely on batteries for anything! Navigation is part of the fun. Thanks for posting.

Amazing how many people get themselves and others in trouble because of a lack of this basic skill. Great find OP.

You mean you 'Navigated' over to here right?, hahahahaha. :-)
By the way, I agree with ALL those that still believe that using the old skool draconian method of good old fashion standard map reading and/or atlas reading skills is still not one that should be assigned to the days of the Dinosaurs?. :-(
Like loads of you pointed out (apart from batteries dying on you, etc, and the various 'Electronic Methods' NOT working too well in High Altitude/Thin Air situations and the like?), basic Map Reading Skills is sweet Art Form in itself?.
Like Maths really?, some are happy to do their Algebra alllllll in their head!, while other's are more than ok allowing a Calculator to do it?.
Both will (hopefully?, hehehe) get you to your end objectives?, but obviously 2 very different methods were applied in reaching there in the first place ..... (not to say the Calculator method is better than that over the brain, or visa/versa or whatever?). :-)

Satnavs and such have their place and I rely on my phone heavily! But everybody should have a sense of direction when they travel, it's not a difficult or even tedious skill to learn. Thanks OP!

great post op. technology is great but sometimes fails, learning map reading and how to use a compass is a great skill. plus it teaches how to read the land properly, hills, valleys, passable streams ect. if your a serious walker/biker its a skill you should consider learning Heat

Google maps is useless when I'm off-road with the dog and the last thing she wants to do is finish the walk and lead me back to the car. I will definitely be trying this course (much to her disgust!!). Thank you!

Heat added as it's a good find (no pun intended) I think I would be drummed out of class though, lol, I have no sense of direction, whatsoever. I swear that part of my brain is missing! I hear people say things like that they are long distance lorry drivers with 'no sense of direction' and I think, no you're not mate, because if you were like me you wouldn't even be able to get out of the carpark.
