Google Photos app for the desktop, PC / MAC and android/ios etc
If you have a Google account (free) this lets you backup your entire photo collection online for free. No storage limits either.
Im currently backing up my 10,000+ photos I have on my laptop, I have 1000+ on my phone automatically backed up too. No need for an external storage device when this does it automatically.
What if I choose High quality and I back up photos taken with a high-resolution camera?
If the camera takes photos with 16 megapixel (MP) resolution or lower, most stored photos will essentially look the same using either storage option.
If the camera takes photos with a resolution higher than 16 MP, then photos will be downsized to 16 MP.
What if I choose High quality and I back up a high-resolution video?
If the video is 1080p or less, your stored video will look close to the original.
If the video is higher than 1080p, then it will be reduced to high-definition 1080p

Make sure you're selective about what folders you choose to upload
I added a note, just be careful if you've higher than 16MP images, doesnt affect me, but worth nothing for others

Also should note, that you cannot store RAW files for free.

I uploaded a test photo to this which was 3.5mb, when I downloaded it it was about 1mb so make sure you don't just use this as a backup solution.

You obviously chose the wrong setting to upload then, there are two, original size of reduced size.

This is very good app. You can search for a picture with anything in it to find it too!

Has this changed recently does anybody know, or more importantly, could somebody tell me if the images are organised as they are uploaded? For example I have around 9,000 images stored on my NAS drive in folders for each event they belong to. When I upload them to my Google Images storage will Google categories them as I have, or will it just be a lump of 9,000 images stored on a server?
Appreciate the help.

The metadata is retained, and can be used as search keywords.
Also, and this is the best bit, Google's algorithm will classify your photos by content and search terms will be context sensitive. So you can search for things like "Paris" or "France" and any pictures with the Eiffel Tower or men in blue stripy jumpers on bikes will be shown. "Red car", "beach", "holiday", "fireworks" etc will throw up photos with that content or with those themes.
The Assistant feature is pretty good too. it will automatically enhance certain images, make collages, and animations from series of single photos.
Edit: the photos are all just in date order though, not stored in your categories. You can put them into collections, but I'm certain that you will need to do that after upload. It does not matter though as you just search for the category.

Date order from the metadata from past experience - maybe try two folders to begin with though and see?

It using Meta Data, so it sorts them by date taken. any with no date are lumped together.

Sorry. Cannot vote hot on this. Flickr has been giving 1tb of free video and picture storage for a long time and I have never had an issue with them. I do not trust Google in any way. I will stick with Flickr as a lot of top photographers use it and the free images are outstanding.
