Google Photos app for the desktop, PC / MAC and android/ios etc
If you have a Google account (free) this lets you backup your entire photo collection online for free. No storage limits either.
Im currently backing up my 10,000+ photos I have on my laptop, I have 1000+ on my phone automatically backed up too. No need for an external storage device when this does it automatically.
What if I choose High quality and I back up photos taken with a high-resolution camera?
If the camera takes photos with 16 megapixel (MP) resolution or lower, most stored photos will essentially look the same using either storage option.
If the camera takes photos with a resolution higher than 16 MP, then photos will be downsized to 16 MP.
What if I choose High quality and I back up a high-resolution video?
If the video is 1080p or less, your stored video will look close to the original.
If the video is higher than 1080p, then it will be reduced to high-definition 1080p

Make sure you're selective about what folders you choose to upload
one important question, this apps for what? You already have Google Drive on your PC! Right?

Something a lot of people don't seem to be aware of.
Google photos still compresses your photos even if you've opted for unlimited storage.
To one of the previous posters, If you upload all 9k photos, you'll need to split them out into albums, if your 9k photos are already split out by album directories, then you can just upload by folder. It then has a view for all photos ordered by a meta-property date taken, so in order of photos taken.

Why not use Flickr? 1 TB of uncompressed photo storage. The only limitation seems to be the 3-minute video limit.

Has anyone used the Android app, Shoebox for online backup? I was recommended it as an alternative for Dropbox as my 50gb free allowance has just ended. So far it seems pretty handy but I've not checked to see if there has been any compression on the uploaded images.

Avoid Google and use a Yahoo product - you do realise they employ the same kind of tax avoidance schemes don't you? Using either of the above is a heck of a lot better than using the likes of Facebook, Apple or Instagram though.

Just to let every one know that I've been using google photos (previously known as picasa) for over 7-8 years and to be honest this is one of the best image/ video storage service.
I've got over 200k photos and videos over the last 15-20 years of collection. Basically I've been saving photos since the year when digital cameras were the size of ipad.
The positive of using Google photos service is that since I have android phone and I use my one email ID for everything. Also I have hundreds of contact using android devices therefore I can easily share any picture or folder with them and they don't have to create a new account on Flickr or somewhere else to see the photos. Also people can add photos to your folder (if you allow) plus there are tons of other benefits too. Google photos is also available on almost every smart TV therefore you can view/ watch your pics or videos on cross platforms which is very useful when sitting with family or friends and you want to bring up the old memories.
Hope this helps!!!

Are you suggesting every free service Google or any other company offers is posted on here at regular intervals? Do you really believe that's what a site called 'Hot UK Deals' is for?
I better go make a post about this amazing free navigation service you can get, it's called google maps. Someone might not know about it so it's relevant.

Has this changed recently does anybody know, or more importantly, could somebody tell me if the images are organised as they are uploaded? For example I have around 9,000 images stored on my NAS drive in folders for each event they belong to. When I upload them to my Google Images storage will Google categories them as I have, or will it just be a lump of 9,000 images stored on a server?
Appreciate the help.

The metadata is retained, and can be used as search keywords.
Also, and this is the best bit, Google's algorithm will classify your photos by content and search terms will be context sensitive. So you can search for things like "Paris" or "France" and any pictures with the Eiffel Tower or men in blue stripy jumpers on bikes will be shown. "Red car", "beach", "holiday", "fireworks" etc will throw up photos with that content or with those themes.
The Assistant feature is pretty good too. it will automatically enhance certain images, make collages, and animations from series of single photos.
Edit: the photos are all just in date order though, not stored in your categories. You can put them into collections, but I'm certain that you will need to do that after upload. It does not matter though as you just search for the category.

It using Meta Data, so it sorts them by date taken. any with no date are lumped together.

Their free storage is good if you use your photos on phone or tablet but not on PC or something with bigger screen

quite a bit of compression of the photo it seems from posts above

Sorry. Cannot vote hot on this. Flickr has been giving 1tb of free video and picture storage for a long time and I have never had an issue with them. I do not trust Google in any way. I will stick with Flickr as a lot of top photographers use it and the free images are outstanding.

One thing I want to know is, is it possible to delete one file off of your phone without it being deleted from the cloud storage?
The only option seems to be to delete all the files from your phone, not individual files.
Try it and find out ! You don't loose you photos
