The law's changing - from April 2016, all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland must be microchipped. It's already compulsory in Northern Ireland. While this normally costs £15-£20 at a local vets, you can get it done for free (please donate if you can) when you book an appointment with the charity Dogs Trust.
Microchipping your dog (a tiny implant about the size of a grain of rice) stores your details as its owner on an electronic database, which makes it much easier to reunite you with your pooch should he/she ever get lost. As long as they're at least eight weeks old, you can have dogs of any breed or size microchipped.
If there's no Dogs Trust centre near you, or if you can't get an appointment, see ChipMyDog.org for free microchipping events happening all over the UK.

Dog chipping? Can't you just bury or cremate them?

Dogs today, babies tomorrow! That is not as daft a possibility as you might think.

If people carry on supporting this government and/or the very style of government that they are (as in, voting in the opposition does not change anything), it will probably be compulsory for humans to be microchipped before long.

Its great that this is becoming law, but it baffles me why DEFRA wont make it law to scan for chips :\

"Free" - They will make you feel like worthless scum if you don't donate and anything meaningfull will come close to standard microchipping price.

Rightly so. If you can afford to pay and don't then, well, you hit the nail on the head.

It's a shame that an offer like this is never extended to cats

check with your local Cats Protection as they often have cheap microchipping offers.

Why is it "rightly so", many can't afford an extra, albeit one-off, expense like this enforced upon them. I thought the purpose of charities was to help those in need.

I would feel like I was taking the P if I used this service. You bought a dog, you bare the cost

Why though? Because the government have made it compulsory, why not take something back?
