The law's changing - from April 2016, all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland must be microchipped. It's already compulsory in Northern Ireland. While this normally costs £15-£20 at a local vets, you can get it done for free (please donate if you can) when you book an appointment with the charity Dogs Trust.
Microchipping your dog (a tiny implant about the size of a grain of rice) stores your details as its owner on an electronic database, which makes it much easier to reunite you with your pooch should he/she ever get lost. As long as they're at least eight weeks old, you can have dogs of any breed or size microchipped.
If there's no Dogs Trust centre near you, or if you can't get an appointment, see ChipMyDog.org for free microchipping events happening all over the UK.
Thanks to MoneySavingExpert for the details.

If people carry on supporting this government and/or the very style of government that they are (as in, voting in the opposition does not change anything), it will probably be compulsory for humans to be microchipped before long.

are you really being that dense ?
I do carry bags with me to clean up. l like the vast majority of dog owners I carry at least 6 bags with me every time we go out.
.my comment was that people seem to think you can make them disappear by magic. I clean up and then (if there is no dog bin within10 minutes walk) put the bag in any bin I see. some people get annoyed that I have put it into their bin tho.
my point was quite simple. if I am out for a two hour walk I'm not going to carry it home with me or carry it around like some smelly talisman for around an hour.
do you understand now ?

Can anyone seriously see what the point of this microchipping is ?? The police won't come out hen you have been burgled , so do you think they are likely to stop you when you are taking Rex ( Alsatian ) for his daily growl n walk and ask to locate his chip? Another TAX on the people who usually follow the rules. Can you guess how many bull mastiff owners will be rushing to the vet for a chip??? £20 buys a lotta White Diamond !

A lot of dogs are stolen nowadays. If by chance you or someone else locates your dog it's good way to identify them.

Completely Agree but can we do the same with cats? That way I can post it all back to the neighbour whose cat is ruining my garden.
I clean up after my dog but get abuse from people that live there. if you put the product in a bag and then put it in a nearby bin some people complain about that too !!! surely putting it into a dustbin is the best thing to do but some people shout and say you should have put it in 'next doors. !!! my dog gets several miles exercise a day. should I carry it around with me for over an hour until I get home ? imagine me leaving it next to my dog outside the postoffice and then on to the next shop etc etc.

The conceit of some people is truly astounding. The sense of entitlement that you must carry around with you to feel justified in judging people that you have never met and know absolutely nothing about is staggering. It is exactly the sort of mindless bigotry that leads to victimisation or minority groups.

My original point was I wouldn't use this service, because I know I can afford to pay for it myself. I'm not saying that there will people out there who will need assistance with the cost.

11 Feb 16#25
lol. It's not attitude m8 because unfortunately I bet they can afford to pay for their mobile phone, have a beer, buy cigarettes, have a 50" tv etc but poor pouch is just a waste of money. So what about dog food etc is that another expense these people can't afford??
lollybug
11 Feb 162#24
I agree with both points made but I agree with the first more. I have 2 dogs myself and when I decided to get them I made that decision to look after them no matter what. I have been in awful monetary situations and that is what charity is there for but I would rather go without myself then not provide them with what they need ( good food, insurance, jabs, worming, flea treatment and chipping, surgery costs, etc.. ) and make a donation or pay full price. It's people that can afford it but would rather have a few drinks at the pub or a pack of smokes then pay themselves that abuse the system and charities in place. At the end of the day it's a good thing to get them chipped and it's a good thing that help is available to people that actually need it. But £20 per dog to get chipped is nothing, you take that on when you take on the dog or you shouldn't get one.

Anything that costs money is an expense. Your view on this is very narrow minded, consider someone that has gone through the hell of losing their job, their partner, their house (taken away following no income), then any possessions of value to pay off any debts. They only have their dog left to keep them sane as they struggle by on what little benefit they get to feed and heat themselves. Suddenly they're forced to take £20 from that budget else risk getting fined or whatever the punishment is. Now they get the chance to get the chipping done free and you scorn them for not donating or abusing a charity that people who are "well-off" in comparison fund. Nice attitude mate.

My partner does this on behalf of the Dogs Trust in the Dearne Valley area. She can come to you or you can come to her. Whichever suits best.
There is definitely no pressure to provide ANY amount of cash or donation . In fact Dogs Trust state that she is not allowed to take monetary donations on their behalf.

Oh he's wanting me to bite!! I'm not getting into a debate but most respectable people will give a donation!! Usually more than the chip costs!!! yes, take something back off a charity that is supported by animal lovers and not the government. if you have the cash pay for it. don't have 'something back' from little old ladies trying to stop animals being in pain that need help.
