HAS to have been bought in your name from Google for this to work and it's not a guarantee either.
If you bought it second hand, then you're out of luck. Only the original purchaser is entitled.

More than fair in my opinion.

How did you come to that conclusion? A device with an in-built defect and/or almost guaranteed failure at some point and if you weren't the original sucker to buy one you're out of luck?

I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't be offered a repair or something, but if you bought it used on eBay for £250 or so, why should that entitle you to a brand new Pixel XL?
Stuff breaks, and most things only come with a 12m warranty, this phone has been out 2 years.

Most phones other than Apple, come with 24 months warranty and, ok, not a new Pixel but when something should have been recalled anyway and if they can't fix the underlying fault, an equivalent or better replacement (e.g. Pixel) is fair game in my opinion. To be honest, Google have been difficult in the past with repairs and tend to send you back to the OEM (e.g. LG for Nexus 5X) and that's why I've not bothered. These things do seem to have inherent bootloop and battery issues, not to mention easily bending.

It's so entirely possible you'll get a refurbished 6P

My Pixel phone is charging very slowly and can't record video more then 10sec. Can I get Nexus 6P instead of this crap?
Opening post
Google is offering Pixel XL as replacement to eligible Nexus 6P owners.

Seems like you need to say the correct fault to get one
