I got my i7 6700 non K for £200 in Feb 2016. Never understood why unlocked K variant was worth the 50% extra. OC won't get you THAT much more power.

They don't usually cost anywhere near 50% more though! As for value for money at the top end; C'est la vie, welocme to capatlism.

6700k wasn't 50 percent extra though. Back then it was like £290 or so and 6700 average price was like £240. 6700 non K turbo on all four cores is 3.7Ghz. The whole point of the K being unlocked is to actually overclock it.
So on a 6700K you can usually OC them to at least 4.6ghz, which is 4.6ghz on all four cores. Which means it can be quite a lot faster than a non k 6700. That's a 25 percent clockspeed boost.

you are aware before you even overclock its already faster yeah? base on 6700 is 3.4 and turbo 4.0 and on 6700k base is 4.0 and turbo 4.2 its not a massive difference but then that is without the overclock, on top of the already higher speed you can then choose to push it further if you wish.
but just by base you get 17% more speed and turbo 5% more with no overclocking.
an average overclock for the k chip is about 4.6 which would give you 18% over the non K at turbo.
my hat off to you for finding it at £200 in feb 2016 as the cheapest price recorded for that month is £275. cheapest price near there was £250 in march.
shame you didn't share the deal on HUKD it would have set the site on fire at that price.

Let's be honest though, this isn't 1980 where clock speed was the underlining factor that made a CPU faster. There are different factors now that can make a CPU "faster".
Which I'm assuming you are aware of.
Just because it has a higher clock-speed does not neccesarily mean a faster CPU.

sorry are you drunk or high?
you do know I was replying to someone comparing a 6700k to a 6700 non k, they are identical other than clock speed and the fact the k version is unlocked so there are absolutely no differences other than clock speed, do you think that somehow an identical chip that's locked to a lower speed is somehow going to be faster?
sorry you just blew my mind, you took the time to try and correct me without bothering to pay any attention to what I said.

I do indeed know that point, and no I'm not drunk.
Maybe my point came off a little... different than I intended.
I wasn't stating specifically that the CPUs you mention, were at all faster than each other - k or non-k.
A point you make was:
"you are aware before you even overclock its already faster yeah? "
Faster, on paper, yes. Any significant difference, no, which you also state.

ebay seller for brand new tray item not gonna set hukd on fire with that one buy retail /high street - pay more :P I've been looking to get a 7700 the same way, but that seller no longer has stock on ebay - probably because of returns, 10% seller fees, and paypal fees If I come across any good cpu deals on the 8000 series I'll be sure to post

Depends on your usage. It's clear that the 7700k is better at performance right now for games and will most likely for the immediate future, but a quad core has nothing on an 8 core,16 thread in workload applications. I bought a intel for my previous rig but this time I got a ryzen, NEVER be a fan boy.
The reason intel is dropping in price is because they're afraid of AMD atm. If you like cheaper stuff, be objective and know that ryzen is better for certain applications.

Never be a fan boy! totally agree, in the last 6 years I have switched gfx card manufacturers twice and cpu manufacturers once, I go where the price, performance, and requirements take me. fan boys pay more and get less.
honestly glad I don't need an upgrade at the mo though as I think what you are saying is pretty much spot on... its not a clear cut race at the mo and it depends on your needs, I was lucky enough to do my last processor upgrade at a time when intel had the goods and AMD didn't so I didn't need to worry about which way to go

Ryzen has a range of products I wasn't specific enough. Save yourself £100 get Ryzen 1600? You get a motherboard that's is going to be supported for years. Anyways I support competition not a Monopoly. This socket is dead next month, keep open mind no fan boying.
I7 7700K more than likely killed by 8th gen i5 6 core next month.

If just for gaming, this. If you're a streamer, or use other software than can benefit from all the Ryzen cores, then Ryzen.

Intel spokesman: We've offered you our greatest overclockable K-range CPU yet, but DONT GO OVERCLOCKING IT NOW!
EDIT: If you want to save money buy getting an earlier generation, buy a 6700k not a 7700k. Unless you don't want to overclock it... wait what?
