Have been looking for a reasonably priced gtx 1060 (6gb version of course) ever since the Ethereum bit coin mining craze began this summer.
Originally £317.97, now £224.97 (£93 off)
Amazon have it on for £298.99 and I haven't seen a gtx 1060 6gb for less than 270 anywhere else

Very good price for brand new. Well spotted OP. Would buy them all for my mining operation but I can't go beyond £200/card haha!

Does this mark the end for mining madness? I wish amazon had at this price so I could buy.
Btw amazon doesn't doesn't even sell this at the moment so there's hope when it does arrive there it will be cheaper too.

I have a 1080 that's usually idle. In our shared university house we have unlimited electricity. Should I be mining etherium? I looked into BTC a while back but got the impression the hope of any meaningful return died years ago.

1080 is one of the worst cards to mine with - sorry to tell you you still can, but your return is going to be worse than on a 1070 strange but true

This is only true for Ethereum mining. Mining zcash will net ~20% greater returns from a 1080 vs a 1070. Check whattomine.com and do some comparisons.
For some easy money, check out nicehash.com. You could earn slightly more buy using a mining pool, but it's dead easy and it switches coins based on what is the most profitable at the time.

Nicehash pays out in bitcoin, which you may see lower payouts of bitcoin as it increases in value.
Mining a crypto yourself is more risky, but you're guaranteed that if you have 1ETH or 1ZEC that value increases with the value of the currency.

I view mining crypto as less risky than buying coins, because if there was a mass crash like what happened to bitcoin a while back, at least you'd still have the hardware which you can get some money back from.
Once you have bitcoin you can buy whatever crypto currency you want.

Get to the NiceHash website now - free electric = free moneyz

The 1080 isn't all that great for mining Ethereum due to its gddr5x memory configuration but if your leccy is free then it wouldn't do any harm to have it ticking over earning you a few quid. It'll help to keep your room warm in winter too :sunglasses:

Sadly the way it will be as mainstream parts like the 1060 will always be made in much bigger quantities than (comparatively) high end parts like the GTX1070.
Heated as this is a very good deal considering how high GPU prices have been lately and it being a 6GB version is much better for future proofing and as this has one of the better cooler designs for the 1060, which doesn't run very hot anyway, there is probably some overclocking headroom to be had too....

Atleast the prices are improving but it's still sad that I paid this for a 970 two years ago which is about the same speed.
I was hoping we would see a 1070 at this price point by now. Guess I will be waiting for Volta.

if the mining trend continues (and yes it will) Volta in mid 2018 and even Navi in 2019 will still be at these prices cryptos aren't going away. Buy the card you want, and if you want a return set it to mine in the time you don't use it

At the moment cryptos mostly use proof of work algos which need gpu or asic miners. Over time cryptos will move to proof of stake algorithms, which will kill compute mining. Ethereum is due to fork and switch to POS within this next year, it was originally planned within the next few months but has been delayed. IMHO POW based currencies will either move to POS or be overtaken.

Why do you think POS will be more successful than POW? I'm not arguing with you.. Just interested.

Check out the ATB coin whitepaper. POW isn't sustainable from an energy point of view and POS had some inherent benefits like scalability.

Also wondering why proof of stake is better.
I've seen videos that explain the difference, but not why they were better (besides power requirements)
Pos could be a mistake that causes mass sell offs due to the perception of lost profitability. I plan to dump half of my ether before pos to hedge this bet.
