Is this to counter the VAT rise for having the sub toasted and taken out?

It always hacks me off that some stores charge extra to swap it for a salad. I know ta a franchise but at least be consistent

They said I had to pay extra for having a bottle of water instead of a fizzy drink, crazy right? I mean seriously I brought a large drink and then told no the water will be 20p more

Well yeah, bringing a large drink to a Subway doesn't mean you can take a water for nothing...
But seriously, of course they charge more for bottles rather than a fountain drink.. they cost more.
