For those looking to add muscle mass (a lot of young guys out there will fall into this category), I would strongly suggest that you take your £17, buy 17 cans of salmon (which can be had in the pound shop) and instead of having protein shakes everyday, in addition to your normal diet, have 1 can of salmon/day. This will have the effect of adding more muscle and power to your body. If you are really serious, have lots of vegetables; add in a source of starch (rice, potato, pasta, etc) and focus on solid forms of protein (no powders).
These protein supplements really are a poor 2nd best compared to real food. And when I say 2nd best...I mean they are the worst method of adding protein to your diet.
Remember, the most potent way of getting big is by improving your diet (excluding supplements).
A caffeine based pre-workout and creatine are the only supplements which have genuinely added muscle to my body.
if you already have a great diet, then the next step is steroids.... NOT PROTEIN POWDER!
IMO protein powders should be banned, because they do virtually nothing to improve your physique, but people keep buying the stuff. And this is coming from someone who is now 42 years old and tried everything (except for steroids).
Here's how I look at it:
If you bought a TV which didn't work, wouldn't you want a refund? If you bought a toothpaste that did not clean your teeth, would you keep buying more? So why do people keep buying protein powders which don't work...and ignore solid food protein sources, which do work?
