still seems quite pricy, what does this offer over say a Xbox, cheap eBay or Amazon controller?

It's a motion controller, so more like a Wiimote than a traditional controller. You can use it to navigate menus like it's a laser pointer, and quite a few games support it as a new control method. For example, in Drop Dead you can use the controller to aim your gun rather than using gaze to aim.

Without it you have no arms, with it you have one arm.

So a good upgrade for VR2 users, not VR3 as it's included, cool.

Do you need to use it with the VR headset?
Can it be used as a joystick for playing non-VR games?
I just found this in the description: ... use it as a gamepad ...

Still expensive for what it is imho
Good deal for today, but I wouldn't take it for more than 20, as the gear vr 2 (last year's model) can be had for 35 new on eBay or gumtree.
In a month or two the vr3 with included controller is likely to be 55-60

makes it much more convenient to FF through the boring bits of XXX movies (GearVR's primary use  )
Opening post
RRP is £49 so this represents a 30% saving. (Use the code VRTH1RTY to get this price).
NB Works with all the "old" Gear VR Headsets and S6/S7 VR enabled phones.
