10 steps to getting an S7 Edge for around half the retail price:
1. Click the ‘Get deal’ link
2. Ensure 'Perfectly fine' is selected
3. Choose your colour (all in stock at time of writing)
4. Go down to 'Pay your device in full', expand it
5. Choose the cheapest tariff - £15pm
6. Purchase it, delivered to your home (card address only) or an O2 store.
7. Once received, O2 will unlock it for free via My O2 > Account > Your device (https://mymobile.o2.co.uk/devicedetails) using IMEI number on the back of the phone.
8. Phone O2 on 202 (from your O2 SIM) or 0344 809 0202 and explain you've paid for the device in full and have changed your mind about the airtime and want to cancel within the 14 day cooling period. You might be charged a small fee for the number of days you had the contract (e.g. £15pm ÷ 30 days (50p) x number of days you had it before cancelling)
9. Ensure you get a cancellation confirmation (if not, call back).
10. You now have an unlocked S7 Edge in near perfect condition for around half the retail price of a new-new one (John Lewis £569.00, Samsung £599.00, Argos £639.95).

I did exactly these steps above a couple weeks ago when it was £50 more and would highly recommend. If you don't know: with O2 Refresh, the contract is split in two - device and airtime (the former you pay off, the latter you cancel). It reduced in price just yesterday when my friend was doing it - going to sell out fast I reckon!

Ok so a word of warning about cancelling the airtime only contract. Just got off a 30 minute battle with a member of O2 retentions team who was adamant that since I had paid the device plan, I had essentially opted out of my 'change of mind' period and would have to pay for 30 days worth of airtime plan. This is not true and if you also find yourself here, please use the following from their T&C to help:

10.4: Subject to paragraph 12 below, if you cancel this Service Agreement during your 14 day Change-Your-Mind Period, any Equipment Agreement that you agreed to at the same time for the supply of any Equipment will also be cancelled unless you choose to pay in full for your Equipment in line with the terms of a Device Plan. Unless we tell you otherwise, w e'll bear the reasonable postage costs of returning the Equipment with all original parts and the original packaging...

The customer service guy kept reading point 10.2 and saying this was more valid since it comes first (which I said was irrelevant):

10.2 If you are cancelling under paragraph 10.1 you must return any Equipment that we supplied or sold you as part of this Agreement, undamaged, unlocked (i.e. free of security or software locks) with proof of purchase, in the original packaging and complete with all the original parts, within the Change-Your-Mind Period. You must return it through the channel you were sold it or through the methods described in our repair and returns policy. Check our Website, ask in an O2 shop or call customer service for details of our repair and returns processes. You'll be charged for Non-Returns.

When I asked him to read 10.4 aloud he was getting more confused with his opinion each time with bigger gaps, but insisting that that since I'd paid my device plan, I'd have to return the phone. Asked to speak to his manager (politely) and he "forewarned me" that the T&C could not be more black and white, I was definitely wrong and that the manager would agree. 5 mins later, he's back on the phone and his exact words were "well I've had a battle with the manager on your behalf for you and he eventually agreed to let you cancel it from tomorrow" then later said "it wasn't my decision". In other words, it became apparent he had misunderstood that part! That or he was sick of me (likely both).

Key bits: Stay polite and calm (even if they're getting annoyed and agitated), quote the appropriate bit of T&Cs, ask them to read that bit to you and if they still don't agree, ask for the manager.

Yes, it's only the airtime side of the contract that's been cancelled, the device is paid for just as you would from a shop and the warranty is valid.

Got mine a couple weeks ago and noticed no scratches. Very minor, if any. If you get it and don't want it, you can easily return it. I would say don't let that description put you off.

Indeed, and I never said it was. Praise to the OP for that deal, this is different, but practically the same. I think people will find there is very little difference between the two, and as I say, based on my experience, I would highly recommend the 'perfectly fine' because I couldn't see any scratches on mine. If you're not happy with the condition, it can easily be returned.

Anyone who thinks this is remotely a good deal is out of their mind. There are so many things wrong with this deal that it's hard to count. But let's try anyway:

1. There's previously been a brand new phone available for a cheaper price.

2. The "O2 Refresh" model is a complete con and you stand a very high chance of being massively overcharged - just read some of the comments in this thread and in the thread I linked above to see what I mean. Then you have a massive battle with incompetent uneducated halfwit support agents trying to claw your money back.

3. O2's blatantly manipulative marketing; calling something "Perfectly Fine" when it is, in fact, a "Grade C" quality product.

Anyone who actually supports this crap deserves to be mucked around.

keep in mind that deal was 3 months ago and this has been the next best deal for an s7 edge to date which is why it is hot. O2 can try an claw money but due to there terms and conditions and if your persistant they can't.

Also you are able to return the phone if it is not up to your standard.

To me I think this is a pretty good deal for an s7 edge but each to there own I guess....

For those considering this deal, please note "Perfectly Fine" is defined as the following on the O2 web site:

Perfectly Fine phones have been a bit more loved, but are still working well.

"They might have superficial scratches on the back, sides and screen but there will be no more than five deep scratches or chips up to 2mm in length. And you'll get a 12 month warranty to put your mind at ease. "

Voted cold due to possibility of having up to 5 deep scratches or chips (even if less than 2mm in length).

It may be worth thinking about buying the "Perfect" version for £70 more.
MrDipdip
7 Apr 17 #70
yes they will do a credit checkall providers do when going into a contract but I found out it will only go bad on your credit rating if you miss payments. If you cancel within 14 days it will show up they've done a credit check on your account but that's about it.

The 10.2 customer is the one who would have cancelled everything and returning their handset etc within the cooling off period. If they didn't return the goods they'd be charged for the product.

The 10.4 customer is the one who would have been following the hukd deal and was to keep the handset and pay for handset in full.

Both the above terms have the same pay out clause. You keep device = you pay for it. If you cancel within 14 days and return handset etc then that = You don't pay.

When the chap was reading out 10.2, payment wise there isn't any difference. Either way you only pay for device.

Yeah so basically you need to keep the sim card in the phone for some time, make at least one call with it. Then 24 hours after that call up and request an unlocking code. What is happening here is that they are matching your SIM card with the phone IMEI number. Then unlocking can take place and should only take max a few days. Done this before, doing this for a second time.
pheyshunt1
8 Apr 17 #82
You do realise that the brand new version was the S7 without the edge. It has a price difference of about £150. I'm personally selling my S7 to o2 refresh and then paying the extra £97 for the S7 Edge. The description of 'Like New' mentions some scratches, however, it may not have any scratches, and if you are not satisfied with the product, you can return it within 14 days, or if you want to try your luck again, you can exchange it within the 14 days. I've ordered 2 S7s from o2 refresh before, brand new and used, both of them were indistinguishable apart from the fact that I left a sticker on the back of one of them to tell the difference between them.

8 Apr 17 #83
It doesn't matter now but it says 'like new' in the title and it's for 'perfectly fine' (grade B/C). It doesn't matter if people got good condition phones, the 'like new' bit is still misleading.

What do you mean who told me that? Nougat ROM for the S6 is a port, do you know why Devs had to port? Because Samsung developed Exynos and it's oh why am I'm bothering just read this and educate yourself...

https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-exynos-and-aosp-explained-a-story-of-betrayal/

"Qualcomm releases always up to date source code which is needed to get all components of their platform working on aosp.
Samsung does nothing."

Hence why a Qualcomm based SOC is better for development than Exynos by Samsung and therefore the longevity of the platform is preserved for future Android updates.

SD may be better for development If there was some on the S7 SD varrient :stuck_out_tongue:
And there ain't anything to talk about, so where you going to get your updates from when the Devs own Exynos's

Exynos on the other hand ROMs a plenty from June kernels too.
And the favoured device since they been kicking SD's butt
So disappear with you Qualcomm bias.
They can't even build their own chip and have to run to Samsung after the SD 810 debacle

Lastly When Samsung has finished as you put it, that is going to put the device well over 3 years old as the S6 is still receiving updates now.

I'm no fool dude. Arrogance is no pretence for knowledge, which you're lacking.

Exynos closed platform
Qualcomm open platform

People do keep and will keep phones like the S6 and buy second hand. You won't get Android O, P etc on an S6 because Samsung won't have created the OS for that platform. On Qualcomm devs can develop for as long as they like until the hardware can't cope.

You don't debate with people who you arrogantly term fools when you don't like what they have to say I imagine as you don't like hearing a valid difference of opinion. I definitely don't have a Qualcomm bias, I have an Exynos based S6, assumption makes a fool out of you.

Qualcomm is SOC for longevity that's definite. Exynos in the S8 is faster than the Snapdragon 835, perhaps you need to learn how to form a balance of opinion.

Who keeps a phone over 3 years? You!
Samsung will support the device into N and the way things are going P too, so a custom rom that will destroy the camera quality will not be required.

Arrogance lol, you told me to educate myself, now your trying to back track and talking about debating. Pick your fights better dude, you ain't telling me nothing I don't know already I was using XDA before android existed.

Dude your just talking theory the thread is on the S7E (not the S6) and the is no Dev on the S7E SD variant so what you are saying just does not apply here.
The S8 is here and the migration to that device will soon start, so good luck trying to get O never mind P on the SD Variant when other people are looking to buy the S9 &10.

Nice, glad yours turned out good too!

Hey guys, sorry you're having problems. I had the same issue when I got mine, but assumed it was a one-off. My SIM wasn't working. I put in a request to unlock the phone and got this back: "The IMEI number you have given us is currently barred". So I phoned O2 and they got it unbarred, and all was well. So, Balb0wa, and anyone else who experiences this - try the unlock (step 7 above) and if they say it's barred, phone O2 and get it unbarred and all will be well.

Rang them up this morning, they are putting the unbar through again, then they willl do the unlock.

She said it was 1 working day, and thats why it hadnt gone through, hmmmm.

Then she says she marked it as priority, and would be done in the next 3 hrs.

Hope i dont have to send it back, its a very nice phone, i had S6 before.

Who keeps a phone over 3 years? Many people do.

Who buy phones over 3 years old? Many people do

How do I know because I'm in the business of selling refurbished IT equipment and phones.

As for backtracking, I haven't gone back on anything I said, you could look up the word backtracking and find out what it really means though.

I'm talking theory that applies to reality, the reality is that UK based S7 and S7 Edge use Exynos 8890 as does the S8 use Exynos 8895, there are Snapdragon versions but since the S6 the UK has got Exynos based SOCs in Samsung phones.

I wasn't aware I was picking a fight with anyone, you're the aggressive, so well done we definitely aren't going to agree.

Got mine just now. Spotless with not a single scratch and looking at the charging port, I don't think it's even been charged once yet.
Spoke to customer services, paid off the device but the agent said airtime will only be cancelled after 30 days.
Had this from them before with my previous refresh. Just sent a complaint to O2 and like before i'm sure they'll cancel it immediately and give me a £10 credit
erjin999
10 Apr 17 #106
Mines arrived earlier today. Logged in to O2 after putting sim in the phone and dialing 202 for about 3 seconds so it would register, then requested unlock in "my account".

Rang up about an hour later (unlock code takes 24 hours apparently) and spoke to agent who said contract will be cancelled tomorrow. I had told him I got a better offer of airtime elsewhere.

The phone itself has a tiny scuff mark on the top by the second noise cancelling microphone. Thats it. No other marks/scratches. I am quite happy with that.

Thanks again OP.

Are you sure you'll receive the unlock code even though you've canceled your airtime?
jap1981
10 Apr 17 #108
Yes I know - but what I am asking is that after I have purchased the phone and cancelled the airtime am I left with with a phone but no contract?
Crossbow
10 Apr 17 #109
Once you put in an unlock request, you're guaranteed to get it (unless you cancel the entire purchase).
Crossbow
10 Apr 17 #110
Once you pay off the device plan in full, cancel the airtime & get your unlock code you can do as you please with it - put in ANY sim you like from ANYnetwork: contract, PAYG or whatever else exists.

Since your in the business then you should know anyone can purchase an Exynos version. There are loads of sellers on the internet.
Since your in the business you would know that anyone who wanted dev since the release of the S7 would have bought an Exynos because there has been NO dev on the SD variant, that dude is FACT.
Time for you to educate yourself with facts and stop telling about your business.:stuck_out_tongue:
Oh I don't anyone who buy a phone over 3 years old to flash a ROM.
And I just don't get all the waffling on about what is used in the UK , it all meant nothing read it again you will see.

Meanwhile most people just buy UK phones and possibly most of them never touch a custom ROM, so we could just debate that we're having a stupid debate here all said and done.

"A great range of phones, for less. That's what you get with Like New. Our second hand phones are checked over and securely wiped, so you get a clean slate. If you change your mind, you'll get 14 days to return it just like a new phone."

Seem yours didn't get the full O2 treatment.

just send an email to their complaints department , they'll get back to you within a few hours just like they did with me and will most probably sort it . Don't bother with their cs team, most of them are clueless!

Just rang 02 and they said they can not cancel the airtime as the payment for the phone is not showing up on their system despite the fact I bought the phone on the 7th and is showing as sent on my bank account. They said it can take up to 5 days to show up on their system and can not cancel it until then.... Is this normal???

I bought mine on Friday and cancelled this morning without a problem. In fact, as I was phoning on my new phone and sim they literally cut my phone off as we were speaking - had to call back on another phone to confirm it'd all gone through.

Worked fine for me.

Ordered the phone on Saturday, it arrived on Monday, I activated the sim straightaway and then logged in to the O2 app and requested the unlock code. I then called O2 and asked them to cancel the contract immediately, the adviser was really helpful and cancelled the line whilst I was on the phone. I was unsure if i'd still receive the unlock code but it arrived via email today, so I am very happy!

Seems this would have been worth the gamble. I'll wait till they are back in stock again or might even wait till the samsung s8 is released then see if the s7 price is decreased... if not they will have thousands in stock anyhow. I just bought one off ebay which turned out to be a fake so i'll be sending it back. Also if you buy one off ebay the seller could report it as stolen or lost to get an insurance payout for it and then you have a barred phone anyhow. This seems like the ideal way to buy an samsung s7. So cheers chris4 for sharing it.

I had a 20 minute battle, but the cs rep would not budge. He just kept telling me that the 14 day period did no longer apply because I paid off the equipment. I gave up. Will call back tomorrow...

Also use this THIS if necessary:

"How much does it cost to end your contract early on O2 Refresh? What do you charge for the leftover Airtime Plan?
With O2 Refresh, there’s no penalty for ending your contract early. All you have to do is pay off the balance of your Phone Plan. There’s no termination charge for ending your Airtime Plan once you’ve settled your Phone Plan."

It may be completely flat battery so leave charger plugged-in and it may take charge then try to power-on after a few hours.

As the device is paid off in full, am I able to do this more than once using the same (airtime bundle and) number before cancelling? For this price I could buy one as a gift too. I just don't want to keep running credit checks. In theory, if that is the case there would be no limit to how many times you could buy a better value handset like this.
quackstar84

The lithium battery safety device may have kick in and put the battery in sleep. Or the phone it self might be faulty.

14 Apr 17 #148
Well what an horrendous experience this is dealing with incompetent O2 staff trying to work with poor O2 systems on a product they appear to have little knowledge of. My order shows as Refresh but when the SIM was activated it showed as a SIM-only tariff and has never been on a Refresh even though the order advises it is.

The staff:
tried to disconnect my other main O2 number on same account
issued PAC when I said I wanted to cancel airtime
insisted on 30 days notice
refused to pass me to supervisor "None in today"!
repeatedly failed to cancel airtime "Oh! he cancelled the cancellation by mistake"
on-hold for 40 minutes
"Are you just trying to get a cheap handset without paying airtime?"
3 days and finally managed to get disconnected "as a gesture of goodwill".

I now await the Direct Debit mess, credit control entries, etc.

I used to recommend O2 specially because of their excellent customer service but now see that has deteriorated to a very sorry state.

[Edit] I should just add my thanks to the OP @Chris4 and say as the S7 itself is a great fast responsive handset, with a beautiful big screen and a joy to use. Just a shame Samsung ditched the IR blaster.

Anyone got any advice or useful tips?

20 Apr 17 #160
I got the same as you, I got really sick of arguing with them in the end and accepted the notice period, I will be ringing to do further battle with them though, once my patience has recovered. I did sense that this was their standard response to people cancelling airtime.

Called back this morning.

One redirect.

One small argument about 10.4 being for sim only contracts (?!)

One small discussion about having to return the phone.

Stayed calm. Stayed polite. Just kept saying about 10.4 applying and that i've paid off the phone already.

Then 5 minutes on hold while they checked with Amy in the disconnections department.

Then...

"I don't know why they told you yesterday that you had to give 30 days notice. I'll cancel it immediately."

Now i just wait to see what hideous amount they put tgrough the dd and look forwards to the calls that follow

Got sent a faulty phone. Returned it 3 weeks ago and still no refund. They are still taking money out my account for line rental.

Spent hours on the phone with each person sounding more convincing than the other.
