While these torches are indeed surprisingly bright compared to your average Sainsbury's incandescent, and cheap too, they are no where near 500 to 1000 lumens. Absolutely no chance. For one, a Cree XPE emitter is not even rated that high and so you're looking closer to 100-200 lumens (which is still good), it's doubtful the emitter is even Cree brand and most likely a cheap knock-off like Lattice Bright with an ugly cool white bluish tint, and lastly the beam distance will most likely have a usable distance of 10-20m and not the 50-100m rated.
With all of this being said, the torch is 2 quid and is good for what it is, in my opinion. It's just the claims are flat out lies, and I have an urge to let you know this.
If money's no object then Energizer Ultimate Lithium are the best. 15-20 year life span, no leaks, holds maximum voltage for longer than alkaline or zinc (so torch stays bright for longer). If you're an infrequent torch user the battery will probably outlast the torch! They are about a fiver for a pack of four if you shop around.

I bought one of these on sale last year, excellent! Still have the same battery in it, and the light is powerful too.

I have about 4 of these and the beam at 40mts is usable and if I zoom it down I can put a spotlight on a building over 70mts away.

Mine was very bright - for maybe 20 minutes max use. Then, it flickered and died down to a fizzle. Won't be bothering again.
