Also the iPad Air 2 has better screen quality (laminated and anti-glare) than the iPad (2017) (as well as being thinner and lighter) - so, if these are the important qualities for you it is still a BETTER purchase!

What utter chuff. The iPad Air 2 still runs iOS 10 like a dream. As good if not better than my iPhone 7.
The new 2017 iPad is not an 'Air', and only has a marginally better processor.
It has the same amount of RAM and the exact same screen. It has the exact same cameras, and the same battery life.
The new iPad is both heavier and thicker than the Air 2.
The iPad Air 2 is still the best option for those who don't want a Pro.
(On the other hand I also have an old iPad 2, which most definitely IS creaking on iOS 9)

John Lewis price match is very hit and miss.
They refuse claims for various different reasons while at the same time they agree to exact same claims from others.
the trick is to send a few requests preferably at different times with different email address even different names.
If they agree, you will be given a code that is not tied to the name you gave them.
Ive done this over years and almost every time there was a Yes response among a few No responses.
so don't take no as their final answer, send more requests.

Buy, yes. Repeatedly - hardly. And mostly only when they can be persuaded to follow their own NKU policy and match a competitive price. In this case it's Currys, and we all know what they're like.

I know! The one I receive will be going back unopened - I paid via PayPal just for security. They also have a faff way of returning items if you pay via paypal. I would've let it but really wanted the 3 year accidental damage cover from JL for £40.

The inconsistency of the John Lewis NKU team beggars belief - despite all the crap about having to "adhere to John Lewis policy to ensure the same standards are applied to all our customers to ensure a fair and consistent service."
Finally got a price match, after several failures, a lot of wasted time on my part and theirs, several iPads headed out to one of their stores for collection (all to be refunded), and a John Lewis/Waitrose customer (me) left feeling even more negative about the brand than I did before.
Most of their NKU policy, despite what they say, depends on luck, and who deals with the claim. These were all perfectly genuine claims, but the treatment of each one depended on who dealt with it - and that's ludicrous.
It just becomes a game of chance in the end, pitting your wits against the NKU team to see who'll win. A bit like the lottery - enter enough times and you'll probably win! :innocent:

Yep Currys seem to only have the Gold available now. Having not really made my mind up looks like we'll be getting the iPad 2017. Maybe not a bad thing as looking at the processor speeds it seems significantly faster than the Air 2 even if the screen isn't as premium. Save £60 though I guess.

John Lewis are still refusing to honour their own Never Knowingly Undersold policy for claims put in while all three colours were still available to order for home delivery by Currys.
What they do, as always, is delay replies for around 24 hours. By that time, Currys availability had changed (all but Gold have gone) so they reject the claims on the basis that they're not in stock. And they're refusing to change their minds on that, claiming that they "must adhere to John Lewis policy to ensure the same standards are applied to all our customers to ensure a fair and consistent service."
As always, Never Knowingly Undersold = Always Knowingly Underhand

I asked if they had any Air 2's in stock, the "service leader" (he was wearing a sash saying so) checked and they had 9 (silver) in stock. I then said it was cheaper in Currys, he loaded a google sheet on an internal intranet which listed lots of shops etc. and next to currys it said "Yes" in the price match column. He then loaded the website saw that it said £399 (he then exclaimed at the difference) and said yes he'd do it. No hassle, no fuss, he just did it.
I can't say the same about the argument I had (via email) with the customer service team.

Here we go again - all the usual lying cheating tactics used by John Lewis to wriggle their way out of NKU claims:
Dear Mr Newbold,
Thank you for contacting us.
I have looked into your claim and found that Currys do not currently have stock of the Apple iPad Air 2, Apple A8X, iOS, 9.7", Wi-Fi, 128GB, Silver, therefore on this occasion I cannot match the price quoted by Currys.
We carry a wide range of lines, and the competitor has to have the line actually in stock (rather than available only to order) for us to match the price. For products that we deliver, we ask that the competitor is able to deliver in equivalent timescales to us, and on products that require delivery, we'll take delivery charges into account when comparing prices.
I am sorry I have not been able to reduce the price on this occasion. If you require any further information or assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,

Too far - nearest store 100 mile round trip. Not surprised about the online team - I've had problems with them pretty much every time I've claimed. They must get paid on the basis of the number of refusals! They use every trick in the book to avoid a claim, and what JL rarely, if ever, does is match a particularly keen price across all its stores. You can succeed in getting a claim through, but it's often a battle.
You can of course just buy the iPad, order it into a local Waitrose, and push the claim after ordering. Nothing to lose - it sits there for 7 days and after that it goes back again for a refund. If they agree the claim, pick it up - if they don't, let the twisters have it back again at their cost.

It's probably your iPad, not the software. My wife's iPhone 6 constantly refused to connect to any Wifi. It was out of warranty but Apple exchanged it out of goodwill and lo and behold the replacement had no issues whatsoever despite running the same iOS. I'd get that iPad replaced if I were you.
SkullKing1300
30 Apr 172#88
If you prefer aesthetics, i would recommend the ipad air 2 as it has a laminated screen and is also marginally thinner.
However, if you are after performance, your best bet would be to go with the latest ipad model. It's noticeably faster than the old air 2. The new model is also future proof as well which is always something to consider when it comes to apple products.

the 2017 iPad lacks the fully laminated and anti reflective display of iPad Air 2.
basically other iPads all have these features (iPad Pro and Mini 4,and Air 2) so the "new" iPad lacks these features hence why people say it has inferior built quality, it really isn't related to built quality but more like lack of premium features.
the 2017 iPad is a budget model.Air 2 was a premium model.
so Air 2 has better specs than the top of the line and current model (7.9") Mini 4.it cannot be called slow or old.
the best option for full size iPad is Pro,after that Air 2 is still the better model than 2017 model.

The wifi problem (wondered if it was a BT HH5 issue) I've had since ios9, same with the keyboard orientation when I pull down for search. Actually wifi problem was much more frequent under iOS 9.

I think it's a bit harsh to rag on the guy that's had iOS 10 issues with the Air 2. It's not been totally smooth for my device either.
I've had my Air 2 since release and generally it's been great but since iOS 10 I've had a few issues. Occasionally the orientation will lock, regardless of the orientation lock setting, and the only way to fix it will be to restart it. I've had the onscreen keyboard come in sideways and upside-down before for seemingly no reason, again, requiring a restart. The WiFi occasionally drops out as well and I need to switch the WiFi off and on again to sort it. Wasn't an issue prior to iOS 10 and isn't an issue on any other wireless devices like my PS4, Windows lappy, iMac or my Android phone.

29 Apr 171#69
I have used both - both are great. Build quality really isn't noticeably different despite all the outrage at Apple 'cheapening' the product (chassis the same, very minimal difference around screen edges) As for the display, unless you were using it in bright sunlight, again you would be pressed to notice the difference, I didn't. Processor of new iPad is a step up, particularly for the higher demand apps. Horses for courses I guess - the OP offer is still very good and I vote Hot.

Yep you are 100% correct. The IPad Air 2 works no problem with IOS10. I really wish people would not post such ill informed rubbish that it doesn't.
No that's the new 2017 iPad - which is actually better priced than expected.
As others have said in the thread already, the difference between the 2017 iPad and the Air 2 is that the new one is slightly thicker as it doesnt have an anti-reflective display so in that regards the new iPad isnt as good as the Air 2. It does however have a slightly better/faster processor but, I doubt it will make that much difference for what most people use an iPad for, when the iPad Air 2 is a very capable device.

Same here. I'm sure it will slow down in years but that laminated display is worth way more than a fractionally newer SoC and the A8X is tri-core as well. Annoyingly I put a tempered glass protector on my Air 2 and some of the display quality has been lost but the extra protection is worth it.
The 'new iPad' feels so fat and heavy compared to an Air 2 or Pro 9.7 - a regression, but I understand why.

Hardly. The new iPad is a budget model with the old non-laminated display. Other than a marginally faster CPU, it's not really better than the Air 2 in any way, other than being 'new'.
pabosotf123
29 Apr 17#29
Air 2 has fully laminated screen and anti reflective coating, so it has a superior screen especially if you ever use it outdoors or in bright conditions. New ipad has better processor but is slightly thicker. Basically the new ipad has better internals than the Air 2 but an inferior screen to keep the cost down to a lower price point. New iPad screen is perfectly acceptable though it's not a bad screen.

Need to get a new iPad and saw this price drop a few days ago. Apart from surfing and email will be mainly using for Lightroom Mobile, so imagery. Therefore my thoughts are more with the Air 2 due to the better screen, my head says the new IPad due to cost and will I ever use the 128gb anyway.

New one has some cheaper components, in my opinion the screen is noticeably worse, not in terms of picture quality but in terms of built. Also not anti glare

i have the new iPad having had to give the iPad Air 2 back to work. the screen in my opinion is noticeably different and annoys me a little as it pushed down a little on pressing. also there are zero cases on the market for the new iPad. had to buy a sleeve instead
From what I can tell, the dimensions of the new 2017 iPad is the exact same as the original iPad Air, so I would assume that a case would fit.

Okay but would prefer a lower storage option with cellular. The cellular version has GPS whereas this version doesn't.
Good though if you really need 128GB and fancy the laminated screen on this older Air 2 versus the cheaper but better RGB performing screen of the new iPad.

The screen is constructed slightly differently (more expensively bonding the elements) which is apparently less reflective than the new model, but is barely noticeable according to reviews.
You have to balance that versus the upgraded SOC CPU in the new model. It's personal choice and as another poster pointed out both will run for years to come.

Do JL have a policy that you can't return if you've opened the box? I rhibk that contravenes distance selling regs.
:innocent:
So much for 'Never knowingly undersold'
phew, bit of a pa-larva but looking forward to move from my 16Gb Ipad 3. thanks for all the guidance above. and OP.
16gb is definitely not enough nowadays, but I think 32gb gives most people enough unless you are a heavy user.
I have emailed to say that the gold is in stock for delivery and collection from store but I imagine they will probably try to say no! :smirk:
Go for the new iPad instead. Basically that guy on the article was say a refurb v a new new iPad - I wouldn't go for a refurb. Just my iponion but always go for the newest/fastest.
I can't say the same about the argument I had (via email) with the customer service team.
Anyone got any evidence to prove that they're wrong? These people have no shame.
Ipad is great - very happy - so thanks again for posting!
I have replied providing evidence that it's available in at least 2 stores I've checked. I have also now ordered it online from Currys in Gold.
Will not open it, in the (vain) hope that JL agree to price match.
who do you speak to and how do you show them this deal? do you have to load up curry's website on your phone and show it to a manager?
I had a problem with delivery of an item a few years ago and had to contact them to get it resolved, which they did. It shouldn't have got to that stage though.
Service in my local branch isn't what it once was either. It's not bad but my expectations are higher than other shops and staff often seem disinterested.

Yours sincerely,
Thank you for your price match request for the Apple iPad Air 2, Apple A8X, iOS, 9.7", Wi-Fi, 128GB, Space Grey.

You can of course just buy the iPad, order it into a local Waitrose, and push the claim after ordering. Nothing to lose - it sits there for 7 days and after that it goes back again for a refund. If they agree the claim, pick it up - if they don't, let the twisters have it back again at their cost.
Out of interest, what is/was BNPL?.
How'd you get your's at that price then?, thanx. :-)
However, if you are after performance, your best bet would be to go with the latest ipad model. It's noticeably faster than the old air 2. The new model is also future proof as well which is always something to consider when it comes to apple products.
basically other iPads all have these features (iPad Pro and Mini 4,and Air 2) so the "new" iPad lacks these features hence why people say it has inferior built quality, it really isn't related to built quality but more like lack of premium features.
the 2017 iPad is a budget model.Air 2 was a premium model.
so Air 2 has better specs than the top of the line and current model (7.9") Mini 4.it cannot be called slow or old.
the best option for full size iPad is Pro,after that Air 2 is still the better model than 2017 model.
Air 2 has better internal specs than their latest 7.9" class Mini 4.
so you saying Mini 4 is also too old and struggling? what a load of rubbish.
I wish I hadn't upgraded as it's so leggy compared to even ios 9
The iPad Air 2 is in some ways better than the new iPad
[img]
Apple tech support say that a clean install will fix it but I don't have the time to do all that.
Wasn't an issue prior to iOS 10 and isn't an issue on any other wireless devices like my PS4, Windows lappy, iMac or my Android phone.
the 2017 has marginally faster CPU and marginally better battery but it's display is noticeably inferior.
the 2017 version is a lower end budget varient.
http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/apple/apple-ipad/1405740/ipad-vs-ipad-air-2-the-new-ipad-is-fast-but-is-it-any-better-than-the-ipad
This might be a bit different, though, in that Currys are probably jumping the gun ahead of a general price drop on these, which will be followed by all the others shortly.
Just to add been using an air 2 for a while and had no performance issues. The screen is much nicer than the new iPad which is mirror like and plastic feeling.
