From 27th March if you use the online click and drop facility to buy royal mail postage then delivery confirmation on parcels comes as standard. (large letters are not included).
This basically means you get enough proof for ebay etc that a 2kg 2nd class parcel has been delivered in the UK by Royal Mail for £2.82.
You have to sign up for a click and drop account and you have to pay for the labels via their website using paypal but if you are selling on ebay you likely have a paypal account anyway.
You can place your parcel in a post box if it will fit, or just hand it in at the post office who will give proof of postage if you require it.
Once you have purchased your label, it will contain a 2D barcode with a tracking number, please note this is not a tracked service, it will just give delivery confirmation notification when scanned at its destination (the same as a signed for service)
This new delivery confirmation is only available for PARCELS paid for through the CLICK and DROP website.
I know Hermes drop shop is cheaper through parcel2go but Royal Mail will be quicker, and i reckon safer for fragile items than them being thrown in the back of someones car for delivery.

I am a postman and have been delivering these 2D barcodes for a few months now.
I have to stress though when placing the 2D code onto a package, please make sure it is completely flat, not one little crinkle on it and definately not folded over a packet or it will not scan and there will be no proof of it being delivered.

They still get thrown in the back of Royal Mail vans I've seen it,but I know what you mean, the courier process is different and not great for fragile items.
No tracking is one of the reasons I stopped using RM as too many people try and claim item not received unless you pay for signed for and then you didn't always get a signature you'd check the tracking and it would say the dreaded
"Your parcel was posted at blah, blah, blah & is currently progressing through the system" arghhh

you dont need a signature for paypal protection, just a form of confirmation of delivery which this service will give you which is great for this price with royal mail.

I was told in the post office confirmed delivery is part of the new price on all parcel deliveries. £2.90 standard 2nd class up to 2kg. Postman now has to scan your parcel when delivered. I posted a small 2nd class parcel yesterday and there was a scan Q on the APL postage label.

if this is true than even better, i read it only applies to click and drop but if you are correct than even better, thanks for the info - the signed for payment is now dead on parcels (unless you really want a signature)!!

Yes I know, that's what I'm saying previously on signed for it would quite often not say anything so now they have changed the system for the better.
Thanks, didn't know this. Went in PO yesterday and they never even mentioned it. Still think in some ways couriers are better, it's like pulling teeth trying to get compensation from RM whereas on a couple of lost parcels I received a refund without fuss from courier.

Parcelforce not much better, I once had to escalate to a regional manager to get £100 compensation and it took 5 months.

Always use My Hermes myself and they have improved vastly in the past six months or so, Parcels dropped at my local parcel shop on a Saturday afternoon are usually delivered Monday
Royal mail just playing catch up, but handy if the PO is closer for you.

I'm not getting any option for 24/48 hour service that has the tracking only the standard 1st/2nd class small parcel?

Just select 1st or 2nd you will get a code on the label which can be used for confirmation.
