Virgin Trains T&Cs:
• Discount is valid on Virgin Trains Advance fares along the West Coast Mainline for travel until 1 April 2017.
• Discount is not valid of journeys travelled on both Virgin Trains West Coast and another train operator. You will need to book the two legs of the journey separately to benefit from the discount.
• When selecting your tickets, the promotional fare will be highlighted in yellow. If these fares do not appear, please change your search criteria.
• The discount is valid on both Standard or First Class Advance

This appears to be the offer that's for people going to NEC group events. You could be asked for proof that you're going to one of their events when your ticket is checked.
Once you’ve booked your ticket, you must show your event ticket/registration, along with your Virgin Trains ticket when on board for your discount to be valid.

Load of nonsense. Most people would look and see the cheapest fare and book that. I'd argue all trip long with the gripper if he asked to see a ticket to a show. Or 'I booked my tickets online and they are waiting for me at the box office I just need to show the credit card I paid for them with' He can't argue with that.
