the reviews on the bike are a bit mixed on the Halfords website, I'm looking for a bike for mainly canal path/light trail riding (20-30 mile trips)
Any advice appreciated, as this bike might be overkill??

It all depends on your budget I guess but a hardtail like this would be more than suitable for light trail riding and commuting. From my own research it seems VooDoo have built a strong reputation in the <£600 mountain bike range. Markymark is right though I considered getting a Cube bike as they also have a good reputation. For a more entry level you could opt for a Carrera but I'd recommend a Specialized Hardrock myself, my old one lasted years and that thing could take a beating on trails considering its low price. It's also worth checking Bikeradar or Global Mountain Bike Network on youtube they have some great buying guides and offer comparisons for various price ranges.

Try a cube , I've had mine for 2 years and is a great bike with no faults on it at all . Lightweight solid bikes , 3 in the family and would buy cube again

We've got a Voodoo Bantu in our local Halfords that was apparently an ex demo bike. My mate who is a manager in a different store says that they don't have demo bikes... however the store tonight said it was used for doing some kind of video going through a woods somewhere.... Personally it seems like a return... However not in too bad a condition and it's £350 with 12 months of their bike care plan and 6 months guarantee. Anyone know if it would be useful for similar... a bit of off roading/canal paths etc. Fancy getting in to doing a bit again but found my old full suspension Saracen way too bouncy for normal use.

voodoo are cracking bikes. I just picked up a aizan 29er from a friend and it's a nice bike, fast roller on roads and good front suspension for off road if needed.

I have a Voodoo Bokor hardtail, highly recommended brand in my opinion. Had it for 6 years now , no problems at all.

I changed my GT to a Voodoo Hoodoo, brilliant bike, all rounder,use it mostly for riding through crap in the New Forest, it has never let me down, build quality is great, gears are also bullet proof, even though it gets washed off each ride the gritty sand played havoc with the GT but the Voodoo shrugs it off ( It will probably break in half tomorrow now I have said all this !!! ) Would definitely buy another esp in view of price (400 when I bought it a few years ago)

I got the Boardman mx comp through cycle2work. My company gave me £200 free accessories with it too.
Currently £600 but the version down is £500 both good bikes I'd recommend.
