Just bought one of these last week for a CCTV set up. Now reduced to £72.99, the cheapest ever.
Ideal NAS for somebody not needing any drive failure redundancy. Otherwise buy the ds216j.

If the unit will run the apps and services you require then why do you need faster? A faster unit uses more power. There a page on the Synology website that shows what each of their units can run simultaneously, if your going to keep the unit on 24/7 I suggest get the slowest possible. You only need a 'play' version if you intend transcoding on the fly.

excellent price for a synology device. i've got the DS116 with a 3TB drive myself, but this is well worth it.

From reading the reviews the processor seems a little slow. Which faster Synology NAS would people recommend as an alternative?

The DS116 that I have has a 1.8mhz Dual Core processor, compared to the DS115j's single core, 800mhz processor. It also has 1GB of ram compared to 256mb as well so in that respect, it's a pretty significant upgrade.
Sonarr and Sickrage are fantastic apps for these if you want a fully automated television PVR.

The synology numbers follow a pattern [Number of bays][year][speed type] j is the slow one, nothing is medium, + is fast. It depends really what you want to do with it

like the op said, if your happy with no redundancy. I owned a little synology and they are simply great...just great. you can either do a little with these things...or tons! It's up to you.

It must be slow, the cpu is 800 Ghz, single core!
This is box only, no drive!

You would think so but it's not. It's only running a very low resource disk station manager, not bloated windows. Bit like when you can use old laptop to run Linux fast.

yes it will run, no it wont transcode, try and use a KODI client and you'll not need to transcode anything (unless transcoding for remote/mobile access)
