Just bought one of these last week for a CCTV set up. Now reduced to £72.99, the cheapest ever.
Ideal NAS for somebody not needing any drive failure redundancy. Otherwise buy the ds216j.

If the unit will run the apps and services you require then why do you need faster? A faster unit uses more power. There a page on the Synology website that shows what each of their units can run simultaneously, if your going to keep the unit on 24/7 I suggest get the slowest possible. You only need a 'play' version if you intend transcoding on the fly.

Agreed, now it's just a front-end for dodgy plugins.
Although as a media library I'm not sure where you could find legal content that would make the most of it...

I'm really tempted to get one for my cctv but the Surveillance Station software is way too expensive for 8 cameras.

I have one of these, it is excellent.
Yes it is the slowest one, but that doesn't mean it can't do anything. I have it running my CCTV system, backing up phones, computers, downloading (stuff ) and streaming music and video to prime stick etc. It handles it all.
I am going to replace it with a larger 2 bay version, but only because i have found i use it that often i want the added security of raid for my data, saying that i will still be keeping this one and running it elsewhere.
Brilliantly made, great software and really good support when you do something stupid (chmodded /etc/ by accident whoops), you do get what you pay for.

Ripped from DVDs and Blu-Rays that you own? Or downloaded from DRM free sources?

I've just gone for DS216:Play
Does anyone know if the Nest camera can use this for local storage (rather than paying their £££ rates)? Ta.

go on then tell me where you get the movies and TV content to put on the DNLA server in the first place?

yes, very much so. i'd always wanted such a front end for all my stuff so it was good to discover kodi before it became the de-facto name for piracy.

i primarily use mine for video - i've got a few hundred films and tv shows on it and i run it through my android box with kodi as the front end.
i've tried plex and it looks nice and works fine and all that but i prefer kodi.

Most people think Kodi is just for pirated movies & tv but it does work very well as a DNLA server/ client.

would make a great simple DLNA Video, Photo, and music server that works with all the smart devices, we all seem to have these days

Or use Raspberry pi + pidrive instead = quiet, energy efficient, powerful enough.

tempted. Currently transferring stuff from 3 older Zyxel NAS boxes to a DS216SE with a pair of 8TB WD Reds in it- something like this would be fun to play with the other applications like surveillance station etc...

i think it'll run i dont think it'll transcode....
what other devices do you want to play off?
paulj48 to Richief
17 Feb 17#14
yes it will run, no it wont transcode, try and use a KODI client and you'll not need to transcode anything (unless transcoding for remote/mobile access)
From reading the reviews the processor seems a little slow. Which faster Synology NAS would people recommend as an alternative?

The DS116 that I have has a 1.8mhz Dual Core processor, compared to the DS115j's single core, 800mhz processor. It also has 1GB of ram compared to 256mb as well so in that respect, it's a pretty significant upgrade.
Sonarr and Sickrage are fantastic apps for these if you want a fully automated television PVR.

The synology numbers follow a pattern [Number of bays][year][speed type] j is the slow one, nothing is medium, + is fast. It depends really what you want to do with it

It must be slow, the cpu is 800 Ghz, single core!
This is box only, no drive!

You would think so but it's not. It's only running a very low resource disk station manager, not bloated windows. Bit like when you can use old laptop to run Linux fast.

like the op said, if your happy with no redundancy. I owned a little synology and they are simply great...just great. you can either do a little with these things...or tons! It's up to you.

excellent price for a synology device. i've got the DS116 with a 3TB drive myself, but this is well worth it.
