LG didn't crack it, Kodak did. LG bought the Kodaks OLED unit which included WRGB filter for OLED rights. This allows them to achieve much better yields.

LG are miles ahead in OLED, such a canny purchase by them.

Sony did produce the first OLED TV back in 2008. It was a fabulously expensive $2,500 for a low res 11" screen. I don't think that there were any follow up consumer sets. Sony still produce professional OLED monitors - the largest of which is 30". You can get the Sony BVM-X300 for about £30,000 or opt for the "budget" PVM version for only £20,000.

So far LG are the only company that seem to have cracked the problem of how to make large screen OLEDs at "affordable" prices.

The panels in the 55" and 65" Sony OLED are indeed made by LG Display. The same applies to the upcoming Panasonic OLEDs.

That shouldn't be too much of a surprise as neither Sony or Panasonic are one of the big display screen manufacturers (such as LG, Samsung and Hisense) and buy in all of their LCD screens too.

LG have given a different response every time someone asks about it, so i would take that with a grain of salt. What is pretty clear is that the guys on the 'Help Desk' don't really know

The fact is, there is another fix in the pipeline for a sound buzzing issue, furthermore the HDR update in US has a bug.

a new firmware with all the above fixes and the HDR game mode is more likely

LG are no doubt bored of everyone contacting them about it, but there is no doubt it is coming, it's possible to install the US version with some jiggery pokery with files if you really were that impatient, but why bother when there is another bug fix on the way!

And yeah i just looked at the wallmount, and it is attached to the part you said... but its pretty impossible to attach a wallmount to the thin part as there is nowhere for the screws to go!

8 Feb 17 #157
In the pics of the back of this TV the mounting points are at the lower thicker portion of the set! If they were indeed at the slimmer top portion it wouldn't be as much of a problem for me but counting the thickness of a bracket on top of the thickness of the lower part of the TV makes it protrude that much more from the wall, which is not what one would expect from a TV in this price range!

As a side note it's not looking good for HDR Game mode...

Who has been bragging about how slim it is?

Not sure about you, but i don't care how slim the TV is, what matters most is the picture quality.

As i said, the wallmount fixes to the slim part of the TV, if that wasn't the case then i could see an issue but as it stands the TV is mounted pretty close to the wall for my liking and i certainly wouldn't need it any closer.

I think you may be forgetting this is an ENTRY LEVEL OLED model?? most people who opt for this are the same who complain about the sound being poor, the threads i could link to on here are endless! LG have simply catered for the masses. If you want a slimmer TV try the next model up!
mattoligy
8 Feb 17 #155
I probably don't lol, but there's one thing I am sure of... common sense. To make a TV super slim (at the top) and brag as much, only to have it as thick as any other set at the bottom, is a little silly tbh. Why bother.

I would think it makes much more sense to leave the speakers off of the main TV, especially considering a lot of people use surround sound set ups or sound bars anyway!? Sacrifice profile for rear firing speakers that will never provide the best sound anyway

Indeed, which is why i said 'Decent' Tv shop. ie not currys, somewhere with a room you can demo it in and mess around with settings etc

Anyway, hair is firmly in place... and whether you were quoting me or not, you asked the same question twice within 3 posts.... that's a little impatient? avforums maybe a better place to ask such questions, i gave you my opinion all sources look stunning imo, it is my opinion though. Your opinion is what counts

Keep your hair on mate! Although I replied to your post it wasn't directed to you personally, but rather to the many who commented that have this tv. As regards taking a stick in to a shop sounds good but in reality the shops are too bright and normally crambed in so tight you can't view from normal distance. If any who have a constructive comment I would still be grateful.

People what is the obsession with how thin the TV is? Once it's on the wall you look at the front, I can't recall ever having the question asked after the TV goes up on the wall, if you get to around 30mm off the wall with large format TV you dont really see anything due to shadow. Let's not forget sound quality, even the new A1 needs a sub woofer you can't hide these in 3mm. If you need it flush build a resesse in the wall or save up for the new LG OLED W it will set you back £7k+ though

I'm not here as an LG rep, you only asked 5 hours ago! i don't use Now TV so didn't respond, but all sources look superb to me.

Upscaling is obviously never as good as native material, but your 1080p set will also be upscaling

Go to a decent TV store and demo one! take 720p clips on a USB stick and try it out!
Jaybeam
8 Feb 17 #150
I've asked the question before but no definite reply as yet- how does it handle 720p material as we use nowtv a lot - will it be worse coming from a 1080p TV owing to the upscaling to 4K - I would appreciate an answer
jayjayuk1234
8 Feb 17 1 #149
It's fine wall mounted, the same as my previous Samsung UE55D8000 with regards to the gap from the wall and the TV, and the samsung was thin all over.....plus the mounting bracket actually attaches to the slim part of this TV. Unless using a very low profile wall mount would that be an issue.

The TV is this thicker at the bottom due to Harmon Kardon 40w speakers

The TV energy ratings have changed over the years, and OLED will use more power then a TV which is illuminated just by the edges, obviously. But it's stil pretty low consumption

My set has no judder, stutter or image retention, and is eye wateringly bright, it's too bright for me and i have to hit the OLED lighting down to around 60/100. Samsung would have you believe that more nits equals better picture, only fools believe this.

Early adopters?? OLED is a few years old now....:smile:

I think you have been reading problems from people who had faulty sets, or using Store Mode settings

You can google ANY TV and find people with issues

Expensive, you get what you pay for, miles ahead in image quality from anything else.

With respect, you don't know what you're talking about.

In the US the LG B6 has an update that reduces HDR latency, not in the U.K. though right!?

EDIT: Just found my deal breaker... This TV looks like a terrible set to be wall mounted, which is essential for me! Ok yeah it's incredibly thin at the top, but what is the point in that when the bottom is as thick as a plasma? My five year old Samsung LED is thinner than the B6

Terrible design in my opinion, and one that has been addressed in the new models coming next month. And what's with the B rating energy efficiency, this is a 2016 TV is it not, or am I missing something?

Sorry but after digging a little deeper this TV is looking more and more like an early adopters set. Lag, Judder, Stutter, Image Retention, Bad Efficiency, Low Brightness, Bad design for mounting, Expensive.

Don't want to upset or offend current owners and yes the picture quality is arguably the main consideration and this TV looks amazing in that department, but as a prospective buyer I have to weigh it all up.

Guess I'll be waiting a few years after all
jayjayuk1234
8 Feb 17 #146
Clueless..... troll post.

This TV does not suffer from image retention, even if you turn off the pixel shift feature the TV dims considerably when no motion is detected.

Oh, and LG B6 has a new update for HDR game mode which halves the latency

P.S if you were losing a lot when gaming, it's probably because you suck and not due to any latency.

Talking about grey uniformity, (or DSE) the KS7000 is amongst the worse! - so you HAVE to be joking here.

DId you enjoy your crushed blacks, crushed whites and inferior image quality on your 'on a budget and can't afford a real 4k TV' Samsung KS7000??

I had the 7000 before and it was appalling narrow viewing angles which meant if you were slightly of center washed out colours and really bad build quality and the build quality is the same on the 8000, 9000 series with the back coming away something that happened to mine in the space of 2 weeks. When i bought my B6 they had it next to the 9000 series and the B6 was hands down the better set even SD is watchable and when you live with dark blacks and vibrant colours you will never look back. Even with the grainy issue im having which may well be source material its still mind blowing.

An installers opinion: Yes the panel is LG's but that's it, Panasonic and Sony use their own chipsets so it's not that simple. I've had the opportunity to see the Sony A1 close up and it's impressive, it's using the X1 Extreme engine (same as the ZD9) so ignore any comments on LG's G6 as they are possibly irrelevant, comparing the A1 to G6, the X1 does a remarkable job and in the same picture mode the A1 has the edge in my opinion. The A1 has a unique feature in regards to speakers, there are 4 exciters that vibrate the screen, it might seem like a gimmick, but sounds impressive with amazing image stearing in demos, the A1 has a SW built into the stand, overall the A1 is distinctly more punchy than the G6's built it sound bar. That said if if nits (HDR) are your concern then they will all be fundamentally the same. if nits are the main concern then look at the ZD9 (something around 1500 iirc), before I saw the ZD9 I was swayed by the OLEDs, now I'd seriously consider ZD9 it's the trade off between black levels and HDR. Incedentally HLG firmware is due soon on the Sony range including many 2016 models.

You are right, but they could only make an 11" and that was something like £3k. Its only LG who have taken the risk on making large size OLED panels and that why any Sony or Panasonic OLED will be made by LG.

The last time Sony made a good TV it had the word, "Trinitron," in the top corner.

I had exactly the same mind set Matsy. I had no choice but to take the plunge as I wanted 3D, this year is the last year LG are making them. I had to go for the more expensive C6.

Comparing them:-
SD, Plasma is better. There is more detail on peoples faces.
HD, OLED is better.
4K, only on OLED
HDR, only on OLED
3D, OLED way way better, (If only 3D had came out now and not 5 years ago.)
Motion, (MOTD for instance,) Plasma a touch better, OLED way better than LCD/LED.
Image retention, OLED way better.
Smart, OLED is better.
Screen uniformity, OLED is better.

Its worth taking the plunge now as you will be waiting many years for the price to get to £1000. I'm glad I did.

wozwebs
6 Feb 17 #107
Built in Netflix / Amazon Prime / Sky Q / Xbox One S 4k Blu-Ray player. I'd say its a current downside of OLED. With each pixel being able to produce its own light dark scenes can pulsate with 'jumping' pixels. Very off putting, especially for the price.

Correct - a 11 inch screen that cost $10,000 circa 2008 i think but it's clearly irrelevant. that's not a typo. But they nor anyone else can mass produce it. They all gave up, except LG. Sony do not make oled panels. im sure that tv will be great though, picture processing by sony is great and that tv is cool, the screen is the speaker! the entire panel vibrates on two actuators creating sound. very good by all accounts.

If you're on a budget I wouldn't bother spending that extra £600 or so to get an OLED. I've got the entry level Samsung LED HDR from last year the KS7000 and paid just under £1000 and it's a lovely TV also I wanted a 4K player to go with it so had to think of the cost added on with that. I play games on it and don't have to worry about the image retention like I would with an OLED and although OLED produce better blacks they don't get as bright as LED. It's also a 10 bit panel so I'm basically not missing out on enough to pay an extra £600

I have the 65KS8000 and previously tried this 56 LG. Blacks were fantastic, yes, but one downside was you get 'jumping' pixels on some dark scenes. Almost as it all the individual pixels with their own light get confused so it pulsates. Very off putting, especially on something like Narco's on Netflix.

Motion on football still not perfect either on OLED. Went for the Samsung and very pleased with it so far.

U do know this is NOT a gaming monitor right? :/ Comparing the 2 is border line insanity! find me a 55inch OLED 4K monitor first.. then we'll talk

I just saw this compared to the KS7000 and this TV is really unremarkable....

It has high latency so it sucks for gaming, it has image retention so you cannot use it as a monitor, it's grey uniformity sucks, the colour gamut is less than the KS7000.....

The only thing it has it beat in is black levels, but I've owned a KS7000 and black is black, unless you turn it up to 20 brightness in the settings and turn off all lights.. which never happens, just let the TV automatically do it.

That said I sent my KS7000 back because I was unhappy with the 20ms of latency, which is still a hell of a lot better than this OLED which is 50+...

I just went back to monitors, I dunno how people put up with latency, my Monitor has a combined figure of 4ms lol.

5 Feb 17 2 #49
When you're getting into this bracket, you should really be looking at spending around 50-75% of what you spent on the TV on audio.
garryallen
5 Feb 17 1 #48
The US set received a firmware update just before Christmas, that reduced lag to ~28ms in both Game and Game HDR mode. Unfortunately, the UK hasn't seen this yet, though LG claim it is 'imminent'. Either way, even with the current slightly higher input lag, it is a fantastic set for gaming on. It will be even better when we get the lag fix.

If it were me I'd get a cheaper TV and invest in some new audio equipment. Good sound is as important as good picture. Up to you of course.

I own a 55" KS7000 and I can't agree... Ok yes at a 10 percent window the KS range hits 1500nits peak brightness with HDR and the B6 around 500/600 - but OLED will spank it on SDR.

I love my KS7000 and believe the LG OLEDs are pretty equal, both with negatives and positives. Saying that, having demo'd both. Even at the same price, I'd chose the KS7000.

Personally I wouldn't buy the B6 until the new LG OLEDs start shipping. I'd imagine it'll hit around £1000 like the 1080p versions did.

Never had an issue with them. Pleasure to deal with.

Personally I dont belive a word of whats on trustpilot these days. Too many good companies with lower scores than others because they dont pay to have negative ones removed.
Then there is the highly rated companies who turn out to be a nightmare to deal with and you find it impossible to leave negative review as they tell trustpilot your not a customer.

Totally agree. Nothing but fantastic customer service from JL every time I've taken something back or needed help. Above and beyond at times. JL and Amazon lead the way in customer service from my experience which is why they are such well respected and used so much and I always use them. Rarely had an issue with price match with JL either - always done it for me as long as at least 1 high st store and its in stock.

Ive had my tv for around 6 months and the picture is very grainy especially on dark areas even in 4K can anyone help as no matter what ive changed it hasn't improved the picture, daylight pictures are fantastic. I don't know if there's something wrong or if its normal can someone share there settings for a light room and dark room that would really help me, i know no 2 sets are the same but it would be a starting point for me to work on the picture as im hoping the grain is due to settings maybe high contrast or backlight.

Thanks

If you're on the fence, then buy it. I bought this from richer sounds a while ago when it was 2k and I'm still loving it. UHD's look great on it, and the firmware issue has sorted the stutter issue. Although I have it running through an AV receiver and speakers, the unit sounds pretty good through the built in speakers which surprised me! Motion is also great on this and the HD footy looks great through sky/virgin.

There have been several firmware updates from LG that have fixed the stuttering issue. The only reason you may want to skip the B6 and move up to the E6 is the lack of 3D and the design.

Cannot fault John Lewis warranties - sent off a smart watch 22m into a 24m warranty - couldn't repair within 28days so issued a full refund of the purchase price!! Above and beyond good service. Chap sat next to me while they were processing mine brought in a surface pro 3 that wasn't holding a charge and because it was in year 2 of the warranty they again issued a full refund for him to go find a new one as they couldn't exchange/repair it! I'd happily buy from them based off this experience
