Does anyone know how to actually run this? Last I read the latest versions of windows can't run earlier versions?
Genuinely considering buying a cheap laptop to play these.

on my windows 8.1 pro laptop all run fine, on my windows 8.1 pro gaming PC they all run fine except for the screen resolution as im on a 40" 4k TV so need a tad tweaking in the settings to run the graphics good, but apart from that all seems to work fine for me. although the EA client can be temperamental

I think it would be a struggle to play this type of game 'effectively' with the typical mousepad you get on a laptop. You can manage and get by of course, but your making it harder and could get frustrated. If your sitting at a table or desk with a laptop, you could of course just plug a traditional mouse in I suppose.
