Maybe still cheaper than RRP, but £54.99 for a joypad... 0_o

They even launched at £59.99 and don't come close to offering the same functionality as the Switch Pro pad.
To clarify as it hasn't been advertised all that well.
The Switch Pro controller features;
- Gyro controls
- HD Rumble
- 40 hours battery life (so i have read anyway, the Wii U pro controller had an 80 hour battery life itself)
It's a pretty damn good pad with those in mind and if utilised fully it should be well worth the money. It will likely be the best way to play most games on the Switch as well.

Dualshock 4's were £49.99 for a long time and no one said anything...

I hope PDP, HORI and other 3rd parties manage to release some alternative cheapo pads before the year is out. I was actually happy with the cheapo PDP themed pads on the Wii U, I know not everyone was.
I suppose if you are only interested in TV play you could sell the included Joy-cons for around £70, buy this and save around £20 on the console price.
