Maybe still cheaper than RRP, but £54.99 for a joypad... 0_o

They even launched at £59.99 and don't come close to offering the same functionality as the Switch Pro pad.
To clarify as it hasn't been advertised all that well.
The Switch Pro controller features;
- Gyro controls
- HD Rumble
- 40 hours battery life (so i have read anyway, the Wii U pro controller had an 80 hour battery life itself)
It's a pretty damn good pad with those in mind and if utilised fully it should be well worth the money. It will likely be the best way to play most games on the Switch as well.

Dualshock 4's were £49.99 for a long time and no one said anything...

I guess that's kind of good to know that the other options weren't great either! Hopefully your order turns up on Friday.

You might still have made the better choice than switching to Zavvi (as I've done) - while my order's still sitting at "processing", there's been at least one report of order cancellation due to using a discount code.

Is a case of a large proportion of PS/XB games are mass produced numbers of generic shooters. That simply has to influence how controllers are designed for those consoles. Also re the price, niche non mainstream products cost more in any industry, that is just how it is. You pay for the finer things and experiences in life. Your shopping at Debenhams & BHS with a PS/XB. With Nintendo, your shopping at House of Fraser or Harvey Nichols. It is always gonna cost more.

Controllers have to be designed for many things. Not just game type. For hand size, comfort, etc.
I don't see how either the PS or XB controller are designed primarily for shooters. Care to elaborate on that? Or another reason to justify the price of the controller?

Not in the slightest. If you really want to break down then.... It is an observation that:
One console maker has been producing non-mainstream consoles with a wide ranging variety of non-mainstream gaming titles for many years now. The other mainstream console makers have created gaming that largely focuses on masses of generic shooters.
To think that the controller needs are the same for 2 quite different types of console, and the different games they run, well that would be naïve.

So basically you just pulled it out of thin air. Alright then.

Well if you have a biscuit factory that just makes mainly plain digestives and not much else, you will need a specific and set of equipment. But if you look at another biscuit factory that likes to do a bit more with its digestives and add on chocolate, and also produces cookies, custard creams and bon-bons you are going to need something more sophisticated equipment wise to cater for all those "genres" of biscuit.

A Nintendo console controller needs a bit more thought process than what a mainstream console needs. Mainstream console controllers are designed with specific genres in mind, mainly generic shooters. a Nintendo controller is required to be more flexible and cater for all types of gaming genres.

There you go, exactly what I meant. I mean £70 is too much but £55 is quite good if you take the points you've just made and consider the other systems controllers at launch and for a few years after launch! I think it's not too bad and if people don't like it then they should hold out until they can afford it or the price drops.
Well said.

Xbox One and PS4 pads go for usually around £34-£42 mark. £54.99 for a Pro controller haha
Overprice accessories from Nintendo.

yeah but ps4 and Xbox pads are everywhere, knowing Nintendo there will be limited numbers and prices will stay high.
even though there's a lot of tech in the controller it's getting silly now, 50+ for something that's realistically a consumable is way too much.

Not a bad price, Xbox One & PS4 pads still sell for £54.99 in most game shops so at least the price is getting there. If it's half as good as the Pro Controller on Wii U I'll definitely pick one up (if they become available at this price again)

Yes but £49.99 is not circa £70 which is what this was earmarked as after announcement.
£70 was taking the... And £54.99, while still pricy seems to be the going rate for a first party controller on launch so it is what it is.

Slightly off topic but how nice does this controller look?! The Gamecube controller is still my second favourite controller of all time after the Xbox 360 one. I really wish I could use this on my PS4 :disappointed:

Does anyone know if Wii U Remotes will work with the Switch though, and if they will be even needed? Because with the wired pads for the Wii U you could plug them into the wireless Remotes, and you were sort of playing wirelessly (although not true wireless).
noahsdad
20 Jan 17#23
That is accurate, there probably won't be a great variety of controller options on the market for the first year either. I actually like to invest in themed pads/remotes etc. They are more fun for kids and I prefer a nice design theme too, am even a sucker for transparent controllers where you can see the circuit board and wires inside.
The themed pads took a while to appear on the Wii U though. That's the one negative about being an early adopter I guess, a lot of peripheral options come on the scene much later. Even if buying a Switch for Xmas, your still an early adopter really.

Don't forget there are plenty of reports out there saying the Joycon (especially on the grip) works just fine for Zelda. No point getting a pro controller unless you are really into Street Fighter 2.

The trouble with Hori pads (I have a few) they often lack features and depending on the features of the pro controller I would err on the side of caution as you dont know what features stick and are prominent with Nintendo consoles.

I hope PDP, HORI and other 3rd parties manage to release some alternative cheapo pads before the year is out. I was actually happy with the cheapo PDP themed pads on the Wii U, I know not everyone was.
I'm gonna wait and try out the joy cons in the grip first before comiting to one of these
