Probably going to go cold like most of the Switch deals at the moment. But might be helpful for someone.
Zelda - £49.99 (£59.99 on Amazon)
1, 2, Switch - £34.99 (£49.99 on Amazon)
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - £44.99 (£49.99 on Amazon)

Some of the comments in here...so many people just wanting to stick the knife in Nintendo already. None of you have even held the thing! Yes it is expensive, but Nintendo know this initial allotment will sell through and you will see some bundles at Christmas.
Also, the NVIDIA shield which this is loosely based on is £200. Factor in the tech involved in the Joy Cons and the dock and £279 is reasonable.
Also, a lot people have short memories. The whole purpose of this machine is to concentrate Nintendo's efforts on one platform. The 3DS sold incredibly well and we are seeing lots of RPGs from Japanese developers being announced for this.
Also to the person who recommended that person buy his family a PS4 or Xbox when they spent lots of time and enjoyed their Wii U? You just don't get it, not even worth trying to explain.

Should I buy a switch? As a family we love the Wii U but is this an expensive step too far?

Keep your WiiU for now, plenty of mileage left in it with the games that are out - I want a Switch but as it stands I'd just be buying it for Zelda - which is coming to Wii U anyway.

I say carry on enjoying the kid/family friendly Wii U and avoid paying the launch price for Switch. You'll be able to get that new Zelda game launching with the Switch on Wii U too. Because of the type of console the Wii u is it doesn't feel long in the tooth at home, yet.

No, the launch price is very high considering it's performance is poorer than the three year plus old PS4 and Xbox One, either of which is a better buy IMHO, likewise games and accessories are priced up to crazy levels to fleece early adopters. Could say this for all new systems to a degree but the switch seems about the worst value of recent systems, especially considering the Playstation 4 and Xbox One console refreshes have been such good value e.g. you could get a Xbox One S and Fifa 17 (not a fan but it's still an OK game) for £200 last year. Shortly after it launched and the PS4 slim was a similar price, even at £350 the PS4 Pro is still good value when you consider it's specification advance over previous systems, and it too could be had a fair bit cheaper if you shopped around.
In summary absolutely do not buy a Switch now, I'd say get a PS4 or Xbox One, which can be done really cheaply now, especially if you are ok with the 'old' non redesigned versions, and catch up on some of the great games you'll have missed having only a Wii U, which received next to zero third party support.
If you absolutely must have a Switch though, I would wait at least till the end of the year as there are likely to be some decent bundle offers by then at least...

I'd wait until the end of the year when we might see some Black Friday deals and the game's that have already been released may have come down in price (Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe etc.). I can see myself getting a Switch when Mario Odyssee releases.

Wait, there won't be much of a selection of games at release and the asking price for what it is, is pretty hefty.

Normally Nintendo Consoles are a bit pricey at launch anyway, and they rapidly deteriorate in price, you could always wait.

£50/£60 is pretty much normal now for brand new consoles. It was the same with the PS4 and Xbone. It'll probably come down to £40 within 6 months.

Prices in the UK are set by retailers, and for comparison for the record the amazon.com (pre-tax) prices for Zelda and Mario are the same as for Resi7, Horizon, and Nier. So their MSRP is not any different.

Sorry, that's just not true.
The PS4 on launch had games which were all roughly £45. That's a good £15 cheaper than this abomination.
