I know this will be voted cold, but these are arguably the best Iphones in terms of price/performance at the moment.
John Lewis have reduced their Sim Free Unlocked Iphone SE prices-
64GB £399, 16GB £349. this is a £30 saving over Apple stores and they come with a 2 year guarantee.
from John Lewis website
What is SIM Free?
You'll receive the iPhone Unlocked without having to commit to any network, leaving you free to decide which SIM card to use in the device. This gives you the opportunity to find the most suitable plan, whether thats contract or pay-as-you-go, throughout the lifetime of the phone. You also have the option to add a foreign SIM card, so you can use the iPhone overseas.

Rubbish!!! John Lewis sell TOTALLY UNLOCKED iPhones (and always have!!!!). UK retailers known to sell totally unlocked iPhones include Apple Stores, John Lewis and GiffGaff. Buy from any of these and worries about "locking to first network" just do not apply.

You'd have to evaluate the pros and cons of each system.
IOS
Pros
Closed system, regularly updated, every app works on every device. Hardware/software optimisation excellent, but see also cons for why this isn't always great.
Cons
Customisation simply doesn't exist in comparison to Android. Squeezing one too many OS updates out on to older hardware effectively crippling the performance. Hardware can be lacking in comparison to the best Android hardware.
Android
Pros
Open source system, customisation is as good as it gets on any mobile OS.
Cons
App incompatibility between devices, due to the nature of Android having to run on multiple differing hardware configurations. Extremely poor updates again due to differing versions of hardware and the Android OS itself. Android can be and often is a clumsy buggy crippling mess of a system.
I use Android I couldn't change to IOS because I love the customisation aspect of Android which is impossible even with jail breaking on IOS, there's a lot I hate about Android as well which makes me tempted to go to IOS but I can't. This is not to say IOS is bad is certainly isn't, it has features which are not currently possible on Android and probably never will be, which are the hardware/software optimisation to the very few devices IOS needs to run on and app compatability for the same reason.
I see Android as a bodged OS, but a very useful bodged OS. I see Apple as a professional system but you use it how Apple specify and not the other way round.

I have a deep seated and irrational hatred of Apple products;
My wife bought one of these last week - and, begrudgingly I'm slightly impressed. It's very quick, feels nice in the hand and is well built. Things I wasn't expecting to work such as importing all the contacts and calendar from a microsoft account / windows phone (lumia 650) seem to have worked fine.
She's not a technophile, but she says there are some things she prefers on the windows and some on the iphone - personally, I suspect if I ever change from windows phone (been using it for 5+ years now...) it might take me a bit longer.
Voted Hot for the good price.

Samsung come with great features that iOS don't have like exploding batteries and hacked os systems or apps or copy designs and apps of iOS !!! What a great phone.
You tell me how apple can compete with that as it's just a simple phone that can be jail broken on owners request and have all the features of the android phones !!

Like someone else on here, I went from a 3GS about 5 years ago and then had a 5s. Both packed up on me eventually - dropping calls, blue screening, not being recognised by itunes etc - even spent a couple of hours in an Apple store where a specialist couldn't help and the 5s was used for my business as well so that got very frustrating for a bit.
Currently using last year's Motorola G4 and it's great after a bit of getting used to after iOS. £159 from Argos, including a £10 voucher which I spent on a high speed memory card for it. On a £10 per month 30 day contract from plusnet, unlimited mins and texts and 4gb of 4G. Wish I'd got the dual SIM version but apart from that, it's a phone and I'm realisti about what I need (including money for holidays)....

Since You've mentioned Xiaomi, is it not equally hard to justify price premium for Samsung, LG or HTC phones?
There is no equivalent of iPhone SE in Android world, only Xperia Compact series gets pretty close, shame about last incarnation that is downgraded compared to Z5 Compact.
Also if you want Android and you're not a fan of all extra apps and skins that manufacturers are forcing upon what are the options? Answer: Pixel and Pixel XL. Still want to talk about paying premium?

Its not just about specs, ecosystem is what makes the apple system so popular. It's more user friendly too. An 85 year old can work an ipad just like a 2 year old can. Android isn't so universally simple to access for all ages. Makes a big difference
Android has plenty of great features too, no denying that but its more of a diluted OS and spec hungry to run well.

Hot if you want Apple. Easily the best phone they offer currently.
However it's becoming increasingly hard to justify the price premium for Apple phones. Just looks at brands like Xiaomi - excellent quality and top specs for a fraction of the cost. This is where the smart money goes.

Picked up this for £350 (well £370 with £20 apple voucher) counting the Amex rebates just before Xmas. Wonderful phone - I do hope they don't ditch the smaller form factor this year.
One thing though - looking at kooks65's comment - I would advise against 16gb. The thing takes live photos at very high resolution, etc. and everything has become that much more media rich; I've kept my work 16Gb for work and essential apps only (no games, or downloaded videos or music) and it's restrictive.
I wouldn't get anything under 64gb for myself going forward. I gave mine to Mrs Harper for her vodafone line as it supports the wifi calling and kept her 5s 64gb instead.

Please do not do the 3 sim trick with iPhones from CPW as your phone will lock to 3 and you will have a hard time convincing 3 to unlock it for you. You will be stuck if 3 refuses to unlock it as CPW don't unlock phones. Just been through that nightmare with my contract iPhone 7 plus from CPW and it took over a week for me to convince 3 to unlock it for me.

Would love to see proof of this - all 64gb iPhone SE tariffs work out more expensive from what I can see. Plus you have the ball ache of cancelling and potentially being charged for the airtime which would then need to be claimed back.
If you are after a small form factor iPhone (not sure why people are comparing this with an s7? - it's no where near as compact) with a practical amount of storage, this appears to be the cheapest way to get one. Plus you get the 2 year warranty with JL and you're not tied into any long term contract. Have some heat!

I like the way you put both points across. Me personally I am iOS. My dad had Android, then Windows and now on iOS and he prefers iOS. I think it because he doesn't have issues with apps and everything is central for him.
I do get annoyed with the lock down of iOS but I didn't like Android that much. I may change my mind most likely as I am starting to like some Android phones.

Yeah, but the closed source means apple has developers by the proverbial balls. The point about updates is mentioned, but don't undercut it. Any updates you do can't be downgraded. They purposefully do this so you upgrade to keep their dwindling sales going.

We can all comment on quality of any product on HUKD, but sort of pointless. Im not going to moan about whether a carpet cleaner is good or whether, Aldi fruit special is good. Apple is by no means perfect in everything they do or how they handle customers new or old.
Finding any deal on iPhones is welcome for THOSE who want to buy one. If you dont like Apple thats all fine, just dont start putting people down for their choices.
The postiives of the SE, (im currently on an outdated iphone4) is that it has the same hardware as the 6 and 7s and is the sizing for those who want a phone that can fit on ones hand easily. The OS will continue to work on it for years to come as the 7s will still need to be able to run the future OS updates. So it has longevity on its side for now.
Battery is pretty good by Which Reviews, probably due to tthe smaller screen.
Obviosuly it will have its drawbacks as with any mobile, whether its Android etc.
The one element that makes the difference in terms of price is that you get a 2 year wrranty with JL, which is probably worth about £70 in the Apple Care world.
Just seems a bit of an incentive for those who want to get an iphone and not take their chances on ebay etc.
And its unlocked too, so great for SIM only deals.

Buy a laptop for these money and don't ruin your eyes trying to see what's going on on an elongated 4 inch screen. Or if small screens is your thing, buy any other tiny phone for £100 and pocket £300, you will be better of financially and also not mugged by a company.

11 Jan 17#95
Careful now, I said the battery life was better.
If the extra £300 for those things you have listed are worth it to you then congrats. Having owned both the battery was worse on the 7 even though it's larger and newer. This is partly down to driving the newer "faster" processor which in real world use is barely noticeable, and because of the larger screen. Which in 2017 is still not 1080p and is still the same resolution as the 5, 5s and SE but looks less sharp because the pixels are larger.
Also the camera in all my tests actually brought nothing extra to the table in day to day use. I can take great shots with the SE.
And lastly how fast does the finger print scanner need to be? I've had no issues on the SE reading my prints and have no feelings about a solid state home button. A button is button, they've never failed on me.
The waterproofing is a nice feature but in the end the 7 is not worth the extra cost, to me. Now the 7 plus is a different story......
Ouenben
11 Jan 17#94
Sounds like you got a damaged/faulty batch if you're saying iPhone 7/plus were terrible build quality. I'm not keen on iPhones at all, would never get one but if there is one thing Apple have done well with seventh iPhone it's build quality and design (though I don't approve of the headphone jack omission)
striker33
11 Jan 17#93
For the same price I'd rather pick up an S7 edge, but then again if youre looking at a 4 inch iPhone then anything else probably won't be a consideration anyway xD
For what it's worth I had one of these before I bought and returned one of the awful 7 AND 7 Plus models (both have equally terrible screens and build quality, apple quality control is awful) and while it's an excellent phone, it still uses the same screen as the iPhone 5, which was similarly plagued with issues. Along with loose power buttons.
Most people won't care though. The size was actually refreshing to go back to, and it made using the awesome camera quite a bit easier.
Ouenben
11 Jan 172#92
All you know at this point is speculation based on possible leaks, nothing has been confirmed yet and reviews don't exist because the phone doesn't exist yet.
Android phones don't hold their value nearly as well as Apple phones, though now that Samsung has gone down the Apple route of premium phones they're holding their value better than they used to.
The s7 Edge was a £650 phone, so you're saying it has already lost £250 in value in about 9-10 months (assuming you bought it on release)
I have an S7 Edge and love it, as it is an incredible phone, I won't be getting the S8 straight away because first I want to make sure it's not going to have any issues at launch (Note 7 anyone?) also the S7 edge is such a good phone it doesn't need to be replaced after a year, could easily see it through to 2018.
I'm very fond of the Samsung range of phones since the S7 (not so much before that), and not particularly keen on iPhones myself, though I have used an iPad for three years which I enjoyed until I moved to my Surface Pro 4, but I could never call iPhones 'junk' or 'garbage' just because I don't enjoy them as much as my own phone. What you're doing on this thread is nothing but blind fanboy behaviour. Adding absolutely nothing to the conversation and throwing the word junk around to the point it has lost all meaning. iPhone SE is a good phone, that's not something you can debate - the reviews, the specifications, the feedback and public interest all contest that. No-one is arguing it's the best phone on the market, and if some people prefer it to an S7 they've every right to.

You choose to overlook at least three key iPhone benefits.
1. Hold their value much better than android phones, so cost of ownership is lower
2. Usually ahead of the game when it comes to integration with things like cars
3. Apps generally better tested and less like to conceal malware
The cons you list for iPhone are of little consequence to most users.
Don't get me wrong. There's a lot I dislike about Apple and iPhones. But, having owned several android phones and several iPhones, I'll stick with iPhone for the foreseeable future.

Its not much better than an iPhone 7 where did you get that info from. The 7 has just as good battery life, a better fingerprint sensor and solid state home button which feels so much better than the older generation apple devices, better cameras, bigger and better screen, 3D Touch, Faster with an A10/M10 instead of the A9/M9 and its Water Resistant. So I fail to see how its better than an iPhone 7. I had the SE and its a great phone but its not a patch on my 7.

Not many rumours out there but Apple normally refresh other iPhone models each year, the SE came out in March 2016 so you never know there might be a new model due this March so reductions on out going models are happening now?

What some people fail to realise is that some folk are happy to pay a premium for an iPhone, as they're user friendly and, as I already have one, I don't have to figure out how to operate a Samsung or whatever. You call them overpriced, but they're not, as millions of people pay the price.
Thanks for posting, OP. My iPhone 5 is starting to creak, so will go for this.

Will people on this forum stop comparing every phone posted and stating that there better than the s7.look at all the reviews all the spec quite simply the s7 is the best phone on the market period.its the sexiest phone at least the edge is.the fastest most reliable.you people keep buying apple products paying through the roof have 3 model updates a year.i wouldn't touch any apple products.i know Samsung are in the high price product and there's a reason for that because your paying for quality.do some research read some reviews and you'll see how the s7 s7egde stacks up against all phones including the ridiculously overpriced pixel phone.

Well that only matters if you have an old phone, at some point all hardware stops getting updates. You can't knock Apple for their update policy though, they really do have an excellent update policy. They support Macbooks, iPhones and iMacs for literally years. You'll get updates on Apple hardware for a lot longer than most Android hardware. The notable exceptions are Google's own brands Nexus and Pixel. In general Android phones are poorly supported, take my Galaxy S6 (please do it's crap) for example, one major OS update a year after release and cited for another major OS release, but again 8 months or so after the OS has been released.
Motorola are fairly good for updates, this is something that Android needs to improve on in general. I really don't fancy getting a Galaxy S8 it'll be on 7.1.1 and by the time 8.x is out, Google will have it out on their phones immediately, whilst Samsung will just do the usual and let you wait for months. You could argue it's because Samsung customise their phones with Touchwiz and need time to adapt the new Android OS, well it's a big downside of owning a Samsung phone.

There is so much lolz in your post, but I'm going to bite anyway....
The link you showed for benchmark results is only one test: 3DMarks and furthermore is relying on users submitting the test results. Surely you'd want to post results of various tests stressing the CPU/RAM/GPU? I'm curious how other tests are rigged for Apple like your claim? They have hardware, they run a test, they post the results. Are they overclocking the Apple hardware to make it better?
I'd also like to point out that we're comparing phones where one has a Dual-Core processor compared to an Octa-Core and one has 2GB RAM compared to 4GB RAM and there's actually a debate of which one is faster.....
I also lol'ed at your comment regarding screen size. I remember not long ago that a 4" screen was considered too big by many. How times have changed and especially how perception of self respect has changed!

BrianM
11 Jan 17#33
Well a LOT of people buy Apple products due to the fact that, no matter where you buy the phone, Apple themselves provide immediate warranty replacements or repairs within the first year (and it generally IS immediate - no waiting or sending away or returning through the retailer!)
Beyond that they generally still go the extra mile - The official warranty actually says the following - Apple Stores seem, in practice, not to argue during the second year.
When you purchase Apple hardware products, you will also receive coverage from the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty. This coverage operates alongside and in addition to your statutory rights under UK consumer law.
I'd say Samsung are just as guilty as Apple recently in their yearly upgrades not offering massive leaps over the previous version. In actual fact Samsung have been taking away features which kept them apart from Apple (removable battery as an example) and let's not mention the rushing of the Note 7 release.....
If you start comparing specs on paper between iPhone's and Android phones the iPhone will always look worse. You need to factor in iOS vs Android. iPhone's with iOS regularly outperform Android phones in benchmark tests because the operating system uses its processor and RAM much better. So even if it has half the RAM it's able to perform better than an Android with twice as much. Also as Apple make their own processors, how do you compare them fairly? I can only think with benchmarks and that's where they often shine.

I was talking about battery life which is pish poor on the 6, 6s and 7. But as far as I'm concerned the SE is better value all round over the over priced 7 which in real work use has very little over it. Thanks for sharing :man:

11 Jan 17#25
I'd say one of the biggest knocks against it is the measly and miserly 1 year guarantee, where most other phone manufacturers give 2 years as standard.
Also, every app doesn't work on every device as certain ones specify certain fw version which some iphones can't update to.

It's definitely correct, I'll expand on what I mean, if you use IOS and you get an app from the app store it'll work on your device. Now if you get an app on Android on your phone there's definitely ones that have issues on Tablets due to the varying screen size and resolution, this simply can't happen on IOS. Another example are Android TV boxes plenty of apps on those will run in phone portrait mode because the system is a bodged phone OS and you can't easily or not at all get them to run widescreen as they should. So I'm correct I just possibly didn't give enough information as to what I meant.

Having used an iPhone 3gs, 5s for years I switched to a galaxy s7 recently and probably won't be going back. I like how the iPhone works but just can't get over the fact that they upgrade the phone the bare minimum in terms of hardware with each new release, yet expect people to pay the full inflated price each time.
Look at the display, processor, amount of ram in this SE model. It's years behind the Galaxy S7 yet it's still expensive at £400.

The ones from JL are truly 'unlocked' - these don't lock with the first sim, they stay unlocked apparently, whereas Argos do lock to the first sim. I remember the big debate when they were on offer before Xmas at £379 and people were ringing JL to pricematch, they refused for myself and a few others for that very reason.
BrianM

You don't even have to do that these days! iPhones are now designed to "activate" by contacting Apple over WiFi (or mobile data?). The John Lewis supplied ones are exactly the same as those sold in Apple Stores in that they are fully SIM-free after the initial activation

This followed hints that the 6 and 7 were too large.
It's been a hit, expecially the memory size.

Keeps me in touch with the peasants that serve me this site
My wife bought one of these last week - and, begrudgingly I'm slightly impressed. It's very quick, feels nice in the hand and is well built. Things I wasn't expecting to work such as importing all the contacts and calendar from a microsoft account / windows phone (lumia 650) seem to have worked fine.
She's not a technophile, but she says there are some things she prefers on the windows and some on the iphone - personally, I suspect if I ever change from windows phone (been using it for 5+ years now...) it might take me a bit longer.
Voted Hot for the good price.
You tell me how apple can compete with that as it's just a simple phone that can be jail broken on owners request and have all the features of the android phones !!
I wonder if this would be the phone that takes me away from the Android operating system I am used to.
Android has plenty of great features too, no denying that but its more of a diluted OS and spec hungry to run well.
However it's becoming increasingly hard to justify the price premium for Apple phones. Just looks at brands like Xiaomi - excellent quality and top specs for a fraction of the cost. This is where the smart money goes.
Heat added on this deal by the way.
All this in fighting about who's phone is best is a bit pointless.
I have a iPhone SE simply because I like the form factor and size, for me it's the best phone I've had and used (even tempted to buy this as a spare)
If you are after a small form factor iPhone (not sure why people are comparing this with an s7? - it's no where near as compact) with a practical amount of storage, this appears to be the cheapest way to get one. Plus you get the 2 year warranty with JL and you're not tied into any long term contract. Have some heat!
I do get annoyed with the lock down of iOS but I didn't like Android that much. I may change my mind most likely as I am starting to like some Android phones.
I have a mate you has had an iPhone for a long long time and kept slating Apple. So this year she changed to an galaxy s7 and her verdict is apart from the camera she misses her iPhone. So I will leave that with you
It's funny you choose to make such a big con list for Android.
Apples best days are behind us
For people who want an SE because they prefer the smaller form factor to the new phones etc, this is the deal. Can only be hot.

Argos offer 1 year warranty not 2.
Better user interface in my opinion and it was like coming home after a holiday in an okay resort..... of to be back in my own bed and a good cuppa !
Enjoy the Samsung ... hope you continue to enjoy the experience.
Also android don't release constant updates and bloat your phone. Old hardware getting new software updates? Plus no iTunes. Think ill take a leaf outta your book and jump on android ship ... Thank u
And its unlocked too, so great for SIM only deals.
thinks thats all from me, good night
Surprise surprise, Apple prices start to get real again.
Thanks
Buy a laptop for these money and don't ruin your eyes trying to see what's going on on an elongated 4 inch screen. Or if small screens is your thing, buy any other tiny phone for £100 and pocket £300, you will be better of financially and also not mugged by a company.
What is this fantastic battery life? A day?
Would you ask if the price had increased by £30?
But, having owned several android phones and several iPhones, I'll stick with iPhone for the foreseeable future.
really powerful and runs buttery smooth.
as long as you prefer smaller phones, this is the best you can get.
Save £30 until 09.03.17 (saving applied to price)
Missus was looking for a replacement for her old iPhone 4.
Not many rumours out there but Apple normally refresh other iPhone models each year, the SE came out in March 2016 so you never know there might be a new model due this March so reductions on out going models are happening now?
Or I could be talking rubbish!
For anyone wanting an SE 64GB unlocked today, this is a hot deal!
Anyway, as per what the whole site is about - it's a good saving on the normal RRP with a decent retailer that offers a good 2 year warranty. Voted hot.

An improvement on a 6, not much else.
Look at the display, processor, amount of ram in this SE model. It's years behind the Galaxy S7 yet it's still expensive at £400.
