Best thing to do is... release MW REMASTERED as a stand alone game for £19.99. Sell a shed load, cancel next years game. Take a year out and then release a new non futuristic game in 2018

Overwatch is a new multiplayer only ip with a multi year development plan so having a free weekend periodically to entice new people is an obvious thing to do.
An huge established yearly IP like COD having 5 days free to play all games modes a month after release? That's unheard of.

PlayStation Plus is required for multiplayer and Zombies in Spaceland. Please note that the trial is the full game with restricted access, and you will need around 60 GB to download the full experience.
If you decide to purchase the full game, you will not need to download Infinite Warfare again. Availability for the Infinite Warfare trial will vary by territory. Please check your territory’s first party store for availability information.

I like this game, I only paid £19.85 so maybe thats why i enjoy it more. It was frustrating at first because I was the noob in the game but picked it up easily enough in about 2 days. MP is fun and for the first time i am actually enjoying Zombies. I will get started on the campaign when i have finished the GTAV campaign.

Bit late to really learn from this year. Next years COD will have already been in development for over two years. That's the problem with annual releases of big games like this, if you mess up on one entry you can't really do good on it until several entries later.
That's why Ubisoft resorted to skipping out this year with Assassin's Creed, because whatever was planned for this year has been stripped back down again and built anew for next year. But given the short timeframe, I can't see even next years entry truly learning from the mistakes that led to the series decline. Gonna be at least AC 2018 before we see things truly change in order to renew interest and boost sales. Same goes for COD.

Agree with comments on here. This year's COD is awful. While Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 are brilliant. Both very accessible even for new players. IW - maps are utterly bland. Okay, it takes time to get good but the will is simply too much to sustain. Hated it and traded before price dropped.

Overwatch was the most hyped new ip in years with great marketing. Regarding free play time, EA do it before release as a selling point for Access, although that is a bit different as it's a service and betas are pretty much glorified demos but it is a new thing for COD. It is true, It's physical sales are down on BO2, but there is bad and there is COD bad. They may be trying different sales techniques but if it's not one of the top sellers of the year I'll be surprised. It will be interesting to see how much it has sold digitally.

I think it's a good idea for games to have these trial periods. This game got some incredibly bad press before release and it definitely suffered as a result.
I've played the game since release and although it's not the best call of duty ever, it's not "that" bad. And the price has dropped to a more reasonable price in the last few weeks.

I mean, next years COD might just be in contemporary settings and a return to the roots of Modern Warfare, but it would be total coincidence rather than learning from the lukewarm reception of this years entry.
Who knows, maybe they got the message early this year when the IW trailer was disliked to hell and back. That might be enough time to switch gears on whatever COD they had lined up for next year.

Yeah I completely agree, I was referring more to the franchise as a whole. I really love World at War, it was easily one of the best multiplayer CODs I've played. Its just a shame that they keep doing all these future sci-fi versions. Hopefully they'll look at Battlefield 1's sales and see that there is still an audience who want a more grounded (NO jetpacks!) world war experience. Bolt action rifles for the win!
