Game of the Year for 2014 but don't think it had too much competition that year. Apparently it is one of the stand out games on the PS4 Pro where you notice the difference over the standard PS4.

The cheapest I seen it since last December .great deal I bought a copy like new played just new it wd take over so sold bought again a year later game of year edition will keep you going for ever

I'm not a fan of Tolkien, so is a game like this wasted on me?
It looks great and I like what I've seen of it but not sure if it requires some prior understanding etc.
Does it treat the player like they should know these locations?
Sorry for being so vague, I really don't know a thing about TLOTR.

Not at all. Some knowledge of the world will of course help with picking up some nuances to the story, but it's a great game even without that.
I'm somewhat tempted to take the opportunity to 'upgrade' my standard version to this, despite that I'll likely not play it again, and saves aren't compatible...
