I would assume that it has suddenly become so popular (like pulled pork etc) that everyone has started drinking it. Just very easy to drink (slightly sweetish) no edge. This stuff has been around for yonks but has taken off big time. My opinion, not that anyone will want it, is it lacks character. It tastes like what it is, a tank produced wine.
At least cava is bottle fermented which tends to give it individual flavours, of course many will prefer the blandness of prosecco. As I say my opinion. Btw cracking deal at this time of year.

I too would like to know your theory behind this. I've had some prosecco that's tastes better than some champagnes.

I wouldn't say chav drink , however , it's not my kind of thing . Still wine certainly is though. Many thanks for this OP as Tesco's 25% deal has finished this is perfect timing. Heat added.

I'm teetotal, but I'm calling bull **** on that. Overpriced champagne is for chavs.
Veneto is about cruising around the bars eating finger food and drinking good prosecco for breakfast.

Comment of a chav trying really hard not to be a chav.
