Buyer Beware !

I am an owner of the Zenfone2, and despite having 4GB RAM, it is poorly made quite likely why it is not officially sold in the UK.

Here are my experiences:

1. Dead pixel whilst under warranty - Asus refused to fix claiming that it's within tolerance. Samsung or most mainstream manufacturers would have fixed.

2. Android 6 "official" update released having waited for months, but infested with bugs, See their release page - Consequently Asus have had no confidence to release this update over the air (OTA) so the Android 6 update needs to be manually downloaded and run !

3. Very poor battery life - Unbelievable battery drain - comparing with my old Samsung and other smartphones. An internet search will reveal that this is extremely commonplace compared to other phones !

P.S. Gearbest's Zenfone2 is more than likely the Chinese version - This may not work with some UK operators.

I'll chew my hands off before I buy anything from Amazon ever again; one of their 'genius' courier (yes, Amazon Logistics) delivered a £150 phone and a radio my partner ordered on the same day to the totally wrong address and it took Amazon the better part of a week to figure this out.. bunch of useless ****..

I wouldn't have been so **** off but right towards the end of their week-long "48 hour " investigation this smug **** "Rahul" started condescendingly asking me "How could your partner sign for YOUR phone, how would the courier or the person at the other flat know their name?" - when I quoted her unique order ID# to him it wiped the smug **** eating grin off his face; I think he added a little common sense and realised what had happened... anyway, as I said the **** nerve of their 'support' team is appalling.

I've heard equally negative things about John Lewis too which worries me, although £130 from Very sounds very tempting :stuck_out_tongue: I'll be sure to check it out, thanks friend for the heads up

Edit: lol, I assumed you were talking about the ZenFone 2 - funnily enough (if you can call it that..) that is pretty much the EXACT same phone I ordered from Amazon (and Amazon managed to f**kup with delivering).

Also that phone has more issues than me.

An interesting piece of kit but zero information/pictures on the Windows installation. It also says that any upgrades invalidates the warranty, does this also include the standard Windows updates that MS push out?

It does. An incorrect assumption in post 2 that Windows is natively installed has caused confusion. Out of the box it is Android. If you jump through hoops you might be able to force it to accept a windows installation as an experiment.

One thing worth mentioning on the site they quote 2 different models of the phone, which is odd, first one quoted is the top of the range one, next one quoted is the lower slower model, bit of a mixed message spec wise

According to GSMArena, the Z3560 1.8Ghz is the 2GB model, you only get 4GB with the Z3580 2.8Ghz. Which is this?

In the title it mentions the former model, the Z3560, so I expect it only has 2gb RAM. It sounded too good to be true to get 4GB RAM for such a low price.

I was looking at getting the Lenovo K80M which has the same processor but 64GB ROM, 4GB RAM and 4,000mah battery.
It was £102 at coolicool for about a month and then they sold out of stock. May be worth looking for the K80M as an alternative if this is the 2GB model.

I bought a Lenovo ZUK Z2 instead.

Ghost touch - quick read suggests 2 causes:
1. Bending of phone (e.g. in pocket). Fix by tightening screws. Chassis is too flexible?
2. Software update introduced error. Fix: Upgrade to marshmallow.

No, just Android, only Android is officially supported.

Windows is possible to load onto it but not officially supported. From looking at references to Windows 7, 8 and 10, it seems to be full Windows rather than Windows Phone so I am guessing that you would lose all phone functionality as well, really seems pointless to me.

Gearbest and banggood pay huge amounts of commision - far higher than likes of amazon. HUKD owners don't care if a site is legit or obeys UK law. PC world, very, scan and BT get huge amounts of abuse on here, but compared to gearbest they are like john Lewis. They also have thousands of paid shills trawling sites like this trying to counter negative criticism so beware of those too.
tuna89
28 Dec 16 1 #37
No chit? I hear John Lewis is pretty bad too... shame. Desperate for a phone - although with that said I have just got off the phone from PayPal & they assured me that if you buy with them they'll cover you? Honestly I'm on enquiring so much due to the fact I've been looking for a phone since late November....

Anyway I think I'll wait for the January sales to kick in before I buy anything - thanks for the heads up.

28 Dec 16 #38
The average trustpilot review for gearbest is 8.0, which doesn't seem so bad, particularly since Amazon.co.uk has an average trustpilot rating of 4.5. In fact, trustpilot.com has a greater proportion of 1 star trustpilot reviews than gearbest!

I've never used gearbest, so I can't give a personal opinion. However, the rating for Amazon makes me question the validity of the reviews in general. There's lies, damn lies and statistics.

P.S. I'm not a paid shill :stuck_out_tongue:

Sure you're not!!! SHILL! :P

but seriously while I did notice that the reviews were generally quiet good for 'gearbest', especially compared to Amazon (I already left Amazon a fuming review and wasn't surprised in the slightest to see others have had similar issues as me) but that's what actually put me off buying this phone; the 1 star reviews (for the majority) seemed quite similar - they'd bought stuff and it either never showed up and PayPal didn't cover them or it showed up broken and they've lost money; to sum up, the issues seem to be consistent.

I'm too much of a worrier, I'm sure I could buy this phone and everything would be hunky-dory but I have terrible luck and am never disappointed betting on it .

I mention this because if I could have £120 or whatever taken from me and I have a working ASUS ZenFone 2 from this company instantly given to me I'd probably do it - but not knowing the site, be a paranoid jerkoff, having terrible luck and having morons for couriers in the past (consistently) I just don't know if I can be bothered with the arseache of it all... a compromise I might have to make...

As I said; I'll likely wait for the January sales to come along, fingers crossed something like this will come along again or better :man:

I have a Zenfone 2 Laser and I have to say I'm really happy with it.

The buttons on the bottom can get in the way when typing on the bottom row but my older version of the Zenfone is great.
Quick to load, battery is great (and removable) double sim works well and there's little lag at all.
I paid the same amount as this phone in Bali two months ago, knowing what I know now I'll definitely try another Asus phone if there isn't much competition.

Gearbest are like all Chinese suppliers. Fine when it works and the prices are great if you avoid Mr Vatman. I got a ZUK Z2 from Banggood and had no issues. Only one experience of Gearbest and I ended up charging back via the credit card company as Yodel lost my goods and Gearbest were fobbing me off.

My advice, use a credit card rather than PayPal. My experience is more buyer protection - I use Halifax and they've been helpful and fair each time.

I bought one of these quite a while ago for around £210, I really wanted to like it but back then it suffered from memory leak, so the high amount of ram was pointless, not sure if that's been fixed though. I couldn't agree more Gearbest customer services are appalling if ever there's an issue with your delivery. I ordered a Xiaomi Mi Band 2 from them beginning of the month and paid for expedited delivery (hoping for Christmas delivery) only to find out they were using Yodel who have lost the parcel but they've marked the tracking status as "delivered" (after originally saying they couldn't find my property!). Obviously Yodel are to blame for the delivery fiasco but they've accepted responsibility and have confirmed that the parcel is missing but said the sender has to make any claims from them and resend the item. Gearbest customer support are so far refusing to send a replacement or offer a refund just saying that they've posted it to the correct address and giving me a link to the tracking status showing 'Delivered' which I'd already seen and was the reason I contacted them in the first place. I suspect a majority of the 8000+ reviews on TrustPilot are fabricated.

3.1415926 to tweetypie04
30 Dec 16 #68
It isn't just Gearbest though. As another poster commented, the thieves at Yodel robbed it and yet marked it as delivered. GB then say sod off as it has been delivered and whether Yodel agree it has been robbed or not, you have to get the Chinaman to make a claim and there is no incentive for them to do so.

Every stage of the process is weak. OK if nothing goes wrong but you are stuffed if it does.

Do find it baffling at times. When people pay the reduced price of a Chinese outlet, like GB or Deal Extreme. Then complain about the delivery time/issues, which are quite obviously either related to the price that you are paying, or are issues out of their control. Maybe GB just do not know how dubious Yodel can be. Saying that, the local distributor we have for Yodel is superb. She drops stuff off, after dropping her kids off at school etc.
