Hot if it doesn't contain a Seagate HDD. Had nothing but trouble with them myself and very often when customer machines die there's a dead seagate at fault.

Same story here. I just spoke to the support team via text chat and it's been backordered. No word on if or when they'll get more in, and seeing as there's a newer Seagate NAS on sale and the listing no longer exists on the Staples site, I'd say it was EOL. The guy said to get in touch on Monday so they can investigate further.
Just annoying that a) the order tracker doesn't work for guests, so I can't check my order status, b) there wasn't an update emailed out to say what's going on and c) that their site allows for them to take more orders than they can fulfill at that time. My order was placed on the 13th, so if I'm out of luck, then...

I was looking for something similar, but with possibility to connect directly to my PD via USB 3 as well. Does anyone know a model with such a port?
Basically, I'd like to transfer a large amount of data from my PC 1st (around 3TB) and the ultrabook doesn't have network card, and I think wifi would take too long or could cause some issue with that large amount of small files, and I'd like to keep the backup sync after on a regular basis.
Once that's done, I'd like to be able to share a specific folder over the internet for external access, so if a model with USB 3 supports that, I'd be quite interested to know the model to have a look pls...
Cheers!!

I read the reviews on Amazon and just googled generally. I cannot say from experience though. I was pretty tempted to grab one myself, but decided not to. Also it looks to be quite big /I prefer the vertical standing ones for space.
What put me off is the large number of rather negative to mediocre reviews.

Unlikely it will work in any consoles. But very good price for the capacity, but its very large and people report the drive failing just outside of warranty. So I will not vote on this one.

"Connecting directly via the ethernet port" is still establishing a network connection to the thing. Being that the box is gigabit ethernet (and presumably your pc is at least 100), one could connect with a single standard cable and no hub - but it is still a network connection, using network protocols. My point was to highlight that, though the box does have a usb port, you cannot connect a computer to use this box as a standard external usb drive.
Regarding the drive within, those who followed the Register link that I posted about the NAS system (not the actual drive) failing, would have read that late 2014 post as documenting a Seagate Barracuda 4gb being fitted to that particular unit purchased 18 months before.
However, I think it would be unreasonable to expect any single model (or version) of a drive to be used inside a unit that has been on the market for what is a rather extended time ...

Glad I didn't buy straight away, found an email had arrived from Quidco "Your bonus has arrived". An extra £10 off any purchase.
So hopefully the £10 plus 8% will track correctly and cost will be down to £72.79.
I have a 4 x 4 nas already so this unit will serve nicely as a secondary backup for crucial files, actually might be a tertiary version.

14 Nov 16#48
If any of the teardown videos of the 2TB models are anything to go by, this model is very likely to be a 4TB Pipeline.
considering the price for a 4TB WD Red NAS drive is £142 quid on ebuyer, this would be worth buying just to pull the drive out and use in something else. heated for that at least.

Yeah but we don't know what HDD model is in here right? The WD Red is specifically for NAS drives that's why it's so expensive.

14 Nov 16#46
Reading the reviews on Amazon there seems to be quite a few reports of failures after six months to a year, so I think I'll give this a miss as I'd only have to buy another more expensive 4TB HDD to ensure it was backed up.
I think I'd rather get a 2TB USB 3 bus powered HDD for about the same price, as it will be faster to transfer files and where possible I prefer to keep drives external to my PC and disconnected when not needed so that a) they're not vulnerable in case of lightening strike, etc. which takes out the main drives and b) I can easily transport them to mirror them to an offsite backup in case someone breaks into my house and nicks all my drives!
I am kinda interested in having a NAS but it doesn't really seem worth the hassle of the issues with cheap units like this or worth the cost of better units, as my PC is on most of the time anyway (running Hanewin NFS) and my Raspberry Pi wakes it from standby if necessary.

On looking at the dimensions, and this teardown video I think it's likely to be a Seagate Pipeline 3.5 inch hard drive in there so it will NOT fit in most laptops.
Note: I am not 100% certain about the model in the 4TB one, but it's almost certainly a 3.5" from the dimensions given on the offer page.
Note this is the 2TB version but BT shop have a 4TB version that is £129.99
So this is a good deal just for the internal drive, but you won't have a warranty.

In the tear down video it shows a Surveillance grade drive its a good price (you can buy the drive new for 40 quid more with a 3 year warranty), but you wont get ANY warranty if you remove the drive and its also a Seagate - so its not for me.

Important to note that this is a NAS unit, not immediately usable as an external usb drive.
It does have a usb port, but that is for attaching an additional external drive to the NAS - not connecting this box to a computer!
The user guide (linked from that Staples page) doesn't mention the ability to mirror to an external drive. So the all the eggs do into the one basket!
However, any backup is much better than no backup! Not so sure I'd want to use it as an un-backed-up content server though ...
The guide also mentioned that recently uploaded content doesn't show up in the space utilisation data immediately "because it is cached". If true, that's the sort of thing that would have me worrying about the need for an uninterruptible (maybe dual) power supply. But as a simple better-than-nothing 4Tb 'backup machine' only, it still looks pretty cheap.
Haven't spotted what the power consumption might be - which does matter if you were thinking of running it 24/7.
It has no fan, so makes little noise, but running hotter makes electronics less reliable.
I am waiting for good QNAP deal. May be worth buying this for hard disk alone if someone confirms it is easy to take HDD out (and unit does not encrypt data which might avoid QNAP reading it again).

That's only useful if the drive inside has a SATA interface - more and more portable drives have a USB3 port integrated instead of a SATA interface. Having said that, it's mainly 2.5" USB connectable HDDs that are like that - anything designed for NAS/ethernet connection is more likey to contain a standard HDD.
Either way, £90 for 4TB is not to be sniffed at. Hot!

It's a great price for the disk alone, let alone the added features. It's a lot of data to loose though if it fails.
