Sky own nowtv. And I'm sure you need to put card details in to start up. It's been a while though.
Is that not the smart box? Ie the latest one. Think this is just the black version (2nd one)

You need credit/debit card details to open a Now TV account. It will auto renew, but you can cancel the pass online at anytime.

it is only the smart box that had the free view tuner isn't it??
and on that you can pause live TV and record if you attach a hard drive??

Yes, only the Now TV Smart Box has the Freeview tuner. This older version does not, as far as I know.

But, weren't (aren't) all these shows on regular tv?
Am I right in thinking people are buying a gadget which allows them to watch repeats?

They are on SkyTV
The NowTV box lets you watch a handful of live channels that are on Sky and also lets you access shows they have been showing on catch-up. They are not all on there forever due to licensing but you can see loads of stuff on there for cheaper than you would pay Sky for. You are also not tied into long contracts.
If you have WiFi at home and a spare HDMI socket on your TV it's a great addition to normal TV.
