Should not be vertical.
Your risk. Microsoft has issued a warning to prospective Xbox One owners: don't stand it up vertically! Do so at your own risk, Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, told GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show. "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," he warned

You can stand the new Xbox one s vertically. You're getting it mixed up with the original big one where you shouldn't stand it up

Indeed, the 2TB xbox one S comes with a stand... just don't knock it when the disc is spinning, same as the 360 in that regard.
