I have a 16-25 railcard. It can be used before 10 am (including journeys into London), but a minimum (discounted) fare applies during term-time of £12 before 10 am. The train fares are so expensive that my discounted fare is over £14, so the card pays for itself in a week.
For those travelling in London, the 16-25 railcard can also be added to any Oyster card to give a 1/3rd off off-peak tube fares.

16-25 is a bit of a let down - my child uses it to get to college. Min fare £12 and she saves about 20p a return journey. Only take 1 year to make the £25 i paid for the rail card.........

Which is a terrible deal. £15 of Tesco vouchers is worth at least £45!

not really.
Most of the deals are available with BOGOF vouchers so not really 3x/4x.

Maybe consider a season ticket, you can get them from between a week to a year.
You can get it so it expires at the end of term as well so you don't have to pay when it's holidays

Is your child getting 2 singles or 1 return ? It might work out cheaper to get an anytime day return.

Depends on which card you have, and where you are. With the Senior or Friends & Family cards that restriction only applies in London and the South East, anywhere else you can travel anytime.
Opening post
Free first class RM delivery.
Offer ends 19 October 2016.
Disabled rail card works out £17.
