Similar to the Mastercard / Apple Pay promotion last year, Mastercard and Android Pay will provide free TfL travel (including bus, Tube and DLR etc) on four Mondays in October.
The only difference is that they are offering free coffee this time too!
In a bid to boost mobile payments, Mastercard kicked-off a series of promotional events last year where it would pay for Londoners' travel if they used its cards to tap in and out of the Tube with Apple Pay. It must have been a success, because today the card giant confirmed that it will do the same for cardholders with Android devices, allowing you to travel on London's travel networks for free every Monday throughout October.
All you need to do is have a Mastercard loaded onto your Android Pay wallet and then use it to touch in and out, like you would an Oyster or contactless card. The offer is available on October 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th and covers travel up to £30.50 across bus, Tube, tram, DLR, Tfl Rail, London Overground routes and most National Rail services in London. It even covers Emirates Air Line cable car and the MBNA Thames Clippers River Bus service.
If that wasn't enough, Mastercard has also teamed up with Caffè Nero to offer a free coffee or hot drink on those dates. For both offers, you will need to pay for your travel and drinks initially, but Mastercard will refund the fare (which could take up to 28 days).
This promotion is open to holders of a Mastercard® card issued by a UK financial institution with an Android Pay compatible device (4.4 operating system or above and NFC enabled).
Under 18’s will require guardian/parental consent to take part.
Offer only valid when using a Mastercard card with Android Pay.
The offer will be available during a series of eight Promotional Periods on four consecutive Mondays commencing 03/10/2016:
Promotional Period 1 (“PP1”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 03/10/2016 to 01:00 on 04/10/2016
Promotional Period 2 (“PP2”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 10/10/2016 to 01:00 on 11/10/2016
Promotional Period 3 (“PP3”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 17/10/2016 to 01:00 on 18/10/2016

Promotional Period 8 (“PP8”) – Caffè Nero Coffee Offer – 00:00 to 23:59 on 24/10/2016

TFL gates (or my phone) are always temperamental, and clearly governed by the law of Sod.
Android Pay will work perfectly every time, UNTIL you are at a gate with a thousand grumpy commuters behind you... then you present your phone to the reader, it will splutter, maybe vibrate, tease you with the prospect of escape... multiple tenths of a second pass and nothing happens. Time slows to a crawl. A thousand pairs of eyes bear down on you, accusing. You hope, against hope, that the magic is just taking longer than normal.... but no, the gate stands firm, unyielding, unwilling to accept your puny Android offering. You feel a shove in your back as you realise you have destroyed the natural flow of humanity - the river of people is not flowing, the beating heart of the city is having a coronary, and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT.
You mumble "sorry" and step aside, broken and worthless.

is there anywhere else other than London where you can pay for a pay as you go journey by tapping on the barriers as opposed to a ticket machine?

Why just free travel in London... What about the rest of the country :disappointed:

Cold from me. My privacy is worth more than a cup of coffee.
I would never give google a credit card number and so a definite identity to associate with all the other personal information I can't stop them collecting.I don't want to tell google anything about what I buy with credit cards either.

I wasn't sure whether the free coffee was applicable to London stores only, but the T&Cs state that it'll be valid in England, Wales and Scotland which is a nice bonus.
