Similar to the Mastercard / Apple Pay promotion last year, Mastercard and Android Pay will provide free TfL travel (including bus, Tube and DLR etc) on four Mondays in October.
The only difference is that they are offering free coffee this time too!
In a bid to boost mobile payments, Mastercard kicked-off a series of promotional events last year where it would pay for Londoners' travel if they used its cards to tap in and out of the Tube with Apple Pay. It must have been a success, because today the card giant confirmed that it will do the same for cardholders with Android devices, allowing you to travel on London's travel networks for free every Monday throughout October.
All you need to do is have a Mastercard loaded onto your Android Pay wallet and then use it to touch in and out, like you would an Oyster or contactless card. The offer is available on October 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th and covers travel up to £30.50 across bus, Tube, tram, DLR, Tfl Rail, London Overground routes and most National Rail services in London. It even covers Emirates Air Line cable car and the MBNA Thames Clippers River Bus service.
If that wasn't enough, Mastercard has also teamed up with Caffè Nero to offer a free coffee or hot drink on those dates. For both offers, you will need to pay for your travel and drinks initially, but Mastercard will refund the fare (which could take up to 28 days).
This promotion is open to holders of a Mastercard® card issued by a UK financial institution with an Android Pay compatible device (4.4 operating system or above and NFC enabled).
Under 18’s will require guardian/parental consent to take part.
Offer only valid when using a Mastercard card with Android Pay.
The offer will be available during a series of eight Promotional Periods on four consecutive Mondays commencing 03/10/2016:
Promotional Period 1 (“PP1”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 03/10/2016 to 01:00 on 04/10/2016
Promotional Period 2 (“PP2”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 10/10/2016 to 01:00 on 11/10/2016
Promotional Period 3 (“PP3”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 17/10/2016 to 01:00 on 18/10/2016
Promotional Period 4 (“PP4”) – TfL Travel Offer – 04:30 on 24/10/2016 to 01:00 on 25/10/2016
Promotional Period 5 (“PP5”) – Caffè Nero Coffee Offer – 00:00 to 23:59 on 03/10/2016
Promotional Period 6 (“PP6”) – Caffè Nero Coffee Offer – 00:00 to 23:59 on 10/10/2016
Promotional Period 7 (“PP7”) – Caffè Nero Coffee Offer – 00:00 to 23:59 on 17/10/2016
Promotional Period 8 (“PP8”) – Caffè Nero Coffee Offer – 00:00 to 23:59 on 24/10/2016

TFL gates (or my phone) are always temperamental, and clearly governed by the law of Sod.
Android Pay will work perfectly every time, UNTIL you are at a gate with a thousand grumpy commuters behind you... then you present your phone to the reader, it will splutter, maybe vibrate, tease you with the prospect of escape... multiple tenths of a second pass and nothing happens. Time slows to a crawl. A thousand pairs of eyes bear down on you, accusing. You hope, against hope, that the magic is just taking longer than normal.... but no, the gate stands firm, unyielding, unwilling to accept your puny Android offering. You feel a shove in your back as you realise you have destroyed the natural flow of humanity - the river of people is not flowing, the beating heart of the city is having a coronary, and IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT.
You mumble "sorry" and step aside, broken and worthless.

You need to read the article again - the vulnerability has nothing to do with whether or not you use Android Pay - merely pointing out that contactless payment has the potential to be a vehicle for fraudulent / stolen card details - and that Android it a more likely carrier as it's easier to develop the required software for.
ie - they could steal your details by an existing method, then load them onto their own android pay app

The bad news: your S3 is still incompatible, despite the I9305 running official 4.4.4. However, you are still welcome to try it out if you have not done so already.
The update to KitKat was designed to deliver HCE capability to devices in order to integrate with closed-loop payment systems and offer contactless solution. IIRC the twist with your device is that it either contains a NFC controller which is incompatible or an older version that is not supported.

This Caffè Nero Coffee Offer is by no means clear...
TFL one is straight forward... use MasterCard on Android Pay to tap in/out and within 28 days you get a refund to your account for the journey cost.
Caffè Nero seems to be a case of show your Android Pay app to the Barista with a Mastercard loaded on the screen and they give you a free coffee. It only says to pay for "additional items" with Android Pay and doesn't mention anything about a refund to your MasterCard account. This suggests that it is a case of show the app on your screen to get the coffee but not to pay for it with the app! An earlier comment and my hunch is that this will be difficult due to staff not being made aware of the offer.
Anyone managed to show the app and staff knew about it?

3 Oct 162#96
This is my understanding: you DO NOT pay with Android Pay, you merely show your MasterCard image from within the app. The tfl travel costs get refunded but the Caffe Nero purchases won't. I just went to the Westminster branch and they had no clue about Android Pay, but they did know about MasterCard. In fact when I got my free drink the till showed "Mastercard discount" so I would suggest mentioning the MasterCard offer rather than the Android Pay offer.

Ok, this should clear things up. You DO NOT use the Android tap system to pay for Cafe Nero.
They will ask for a code to pay for the coffee like the O2 code offers. Show them the info online if necessary but they should have an internal memo from a head office. There is an internal new code for MasterCard they can use on their till. Make sure you show the MasterCard Car in the Android app to qualify.
Just be friendly and show them the site if necessary and this should be all you need for your free coffee. Enjoy!

Not sure that *not* using the Android Pay app is the right advice. The instructions on the MasterCard website are clearer than in the T&Cs:

TFL works as expected. Use it on just about any form of London transport. End of the day. TFL will tot it all up like they always do for contactless. A couple of weeks later it will all be refunded to your MasterCard. Result!!! as a normal working day costs me more than a tenner and this offer allows me to use various modes of transport to get around. No more walking when I can take a free bus.
The Cafe Nero deal is unclear. I got caught. as others say. You do not tap your phone. You just wave your phone at the staff muttering "MasterCard offer". They will press a button on the till and it will be free. most staff won't have a clue but someone will eventually. Will obviously sort itself next week when all the staff read the memo and manager take notice of all be people using android pay today.
But why is an android pay promotion not actually using android pay? Sounds like a badly prepared IT department at Nero or MasterCard. Tut tut.
I wonder how much money they made by people buying coffee at £2.70 and zapping their phones.
The advert in the metro makes out like you have to tap. Which you do on tFL.
Shame also on MasterCard on not having proper feedback mechanism advertised. O2 at least have a Twitter feed which they do respond to about the 02 priority offers which screw up like the M&S cake offer. And Amex offers have a hotline which quickly processes refund on their offers if they go wrong. Customer service makes happy punters.

Cafe Nero in Westfield Stratford also only accepting cash payments today. That's 2 branches I visited today. I wonder if they are accepting any card payments at any of their stores today.

Used it at lunchtime in Coventry, barista didn't really know what to do, he was reading the issued flyer but couldn't understand whether showing the card on your phone is enough. He rightly pointed out that you could do it as many times as you like (if need be, at different branches). He accepted it, anyway. Just as well as card machine was down (sounds like a national problem today).

Does anyone else have problem with Android pay tap in/out? It worked perfectly at Canary Wharf when I touched in but didn't work at all when I was trying to touch out at Kew Gardens - I tried more than 10 times and it kept saying touch failure - had to touch out with my bank card at the end

Yes, I had a problem with it on TFL's Thames Clipper and had to use the actual card and tap it. Everywhere else worked fine.
Not sure who to call to resolve it, Mastercard told me call bank, bank told me call TFL. Let's see who TFL will tell me to call now...

I got my free coffee today, I just set my mastercard as the default, opened the Android pay app so I could see it. Tapped to pay with it and I was not charged the £2 for my espresso  Usually it would show a charge on the charge instantly if I did that and it cost something, it shows the tick/circle so I'm pretty sure it worked okay.
The guy at the till had no idea about the offer.
Then I bought something else to eat with some change, to avoid breaking the freebie part.

I popped in my local Nero today and they have little cardboard templates attached to the side of their card machines saying something along the lines of accepting MasterCard via Android pay and also mentions the free coffee in October. Think they'll be hard pressed to not know anything about it when it is attached to their card machines. May be store specific but I'm certainly more confident about trying this next week!

My experience of using AndroidPay:
I tried at 1st on Aeroplane mode and it said you need a signal for Android Pay to work.
(I'm thinking how are you suppose to pay when there is no/poor signal ie.underground,
inside shopping centre etc.)
On exit at New Malden station,I had to try about 10 times before the damn thing worked.
I was worried if I didn't touch out I would be charged the penalty fare so thankfully it
eventually worked.
I also noticed that there is a slight delay (ie.a bit slower) compared with using my
usual Nationwide contactless card.
And so to answer your question, yes it is a bit rubbish,as on more than one occasion I had to try a few times before the transaction went through, whereas my usual Nationwide contactless does it straight away.
Tip: Bring a contactless card with you in case damn thing no work!!

Regarding the LG Leon, it was indeed quite a fiasco at that time trying to get hold of it. Wonky Voda website, item on backorder but no communication, enforced 10pound topup unusable as cash depending on how rabid is your local Voda store, hence didnt participate in getting one then but its been a while since then.
Yesterday, found a nicer Voda store and am going to try for the Leon online delivering to that store and get topup as credit instead.
LG Leon has Android 6 update too.

5 Oct 16#137
Good luck, but it seems to list that phone as being on a 1-2 week wait either in-store (wherever you try in London and the South-East, where I am) or for delivery. That sort of time frame sounds to me like the company is out of stock, and there's maybe just a few handsets lying around in the odd store. :disappointed:

Hey, thanks for getting in touch mate. The site says you don't have private messaging enabled (?), so that's why i'm replying here.To be honest, I just wanted something with NFC as cheap as possible to make use of this free travel offer (and a Clubcard points offer as well). I'm no expert on smartphones (i've just got an old Lumia running Windows, which is fairly useless these days) and had never heard of the LG Leon you mentioned, which is easily the best deal i've seen. The Vodafone Smart phones you mention I have heard of, but they do seem to be reviewed a fair bit better than the Leon. I don't use my mobile much though, so am only really after one to make use of offers like this, so i'll keep an eye out for a Leon somewhere.
Huge thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it. You certainly know a lot more about all this than I do!
Davening - just so you know, I literally can't message you, it says you don't have private messaging enabled whenever I try to send you something. You might need to get in touch with the site admin about this.

Why not try getting a refurbished phone from places like cex?

6 Oct 16#147
I did actually have a look in my (very smelly) branch of CEX the other day, but the cheapest smartphone was a Sony Tipo (never heard of it) and that was £35 even without NFC! I'd only be using the phone for two of the three remaining Mondays in this offer so it will now only save me £12.40, so I really don't want to spend much. But seeing as this kind of offer does seem to come up with some regularity i'm probably going to try and track down the LG Leon that Davening mentioned above, particularly since it can handle a fairly recent version of Android.

Yes, I did get the Leon.
The screen brightness comments I also saw isnt an issue to me, esp for 29pounds. Its possible I cant tell the difference with my DoogeeX5Pro.
But, Barclaycard isnt accepted by Android Pay. Ungh!!!
Although it is Android 6, adoptable storage isnt enabled but only portable storage. Nevertheless, you are still allowed to move some apps to sdcard.
However, being used to be able to stuff my mobile with apps and music, the Leon isnt that. Would use it as a glorified credit card.
Once I figure out the Revolut card, might try it with Android Pay but it vorks for some but not others.
For the time being its my new pet white elephant.
Have been looking at Bluboo Picasso nfc 4g at around 60-70pounds presale. But with my hand firmly on my wallet. It could be ideal except no fingerprint sensor otherwise almost like the DoogeeX5Pro but plus nfc.
Hope this helps.

Contacted MasterCard (after originally contacting my card issuer) regarding the Caffe Nero refund not coming through. Was told you only had to show your card, not actually pay with it. Looking at their terms and conditions this is indeed stated there, but I don't feel they made it particularly clear :disappointed:
MasterCard are sending me a free Neros voucher as compensation, which is nice of them, but I still feel the terms could have been a little clearer. Oh well, live and learn!

How did you contact Mastercard? I have an issue as well. But they've all been passing me back and forth
Opening post
The only difference is that they are offering free coffee this time too!
Useful info from Engadget ( https://www.engadget.com/2016/09/28/mastercard-android-pay-coffee-tube-london/ ) copied below:
-------------------------------------------------
In a bid to boost mobile payments, Mastercard kicked-off a series of promotional events last year where it would pay for Londoners' travel if they used its cards to tap in and out of the Tube with Apple Pay.

The update to KitKat was designed to deliver HCE capability to devices in order to integrate with closed-loop payment systems and offer contactless solution. IIRC the twist with your device is that it either contains a NFC controller which is incompatible or an older version that is not supported.

Anyone presented their phone to the barista yet to see what they did with it?
Ahhh I see, 28 day rebate.
It seems if you need Mastercard, you need apply for Credit Cards.
In the end they gave up, and stamped up a new loyalty card to make the 'payment'.
Poor management/comms from Caffe Nero IMO
No free coffee. :disappointed:
They will ask for a code to pay for the coffee like the O2 code offers. Show them the info online if necessary but they should have an internal memo from a head office. There is an internal new code for MasterCard they can use on their till. Make sure you show the MasterCard Car in the Android app to qualify.
Just be friendly and show them the site if necessary and this should be all you need for your free coffee. Enjoy!

I can confirm this works, just got a large cappuccino in Edinburgh without saying a word to the staff. Tapped my phone as I usually do, it accepted it but doesn't register a charge (you can see this on the mini-statement, there's no item for the transaction).
any questions, feel free to ask ill try and help.
awesome idea, really like the system and possibilities.
Can I use the Android Pay with the same card on 2 devices? Maybe I am going to try another phone.
MasterCard are sending me a free Neros voucher as compensation, which is nice of them, but I still feel the terms could have been a little clearer. Oh well, live and learn!
