When you buy Co-op branded products and services, 5% of what you spend is rewarded back to you into your Co-op Membership account. 1% of everything you spend on Co-op branded products and services, Co-op will give to your community or a charity of your selection. This can be a charity or cause like enhancing the local park, funding a community football club or tackling loneliness through charity services.
Example:
Spend £35 on a weekly food shop and you get £1.75 back as a reward, and £0.35 to allocate to your community. Do this 3 times a month and you'll earn £5.25 reward back, and £1.05 to allocate back to your community. That's over £60 reward back to you a year. This of course can be higher if you also buy other services from Co-op
Choosing where Co-op directs this money, even make things better for your local community
All this for a £1 one off payment!

Does this include gas and electric supply from co-op?
Apart from some exclusions you can earn your 5% and 1% across our family of businesses.
You’ll earn straight away at:
Co-op Food: all Co-op own brand products
Co-op Funeralcare: when you pay for a funeral or buy a Co-op Funeral Plan
Co-op Legal Services: various fixed price legal products, including wills/lasting powers of attorney and fixed price family law products
We’ll be introducing rewards and benefits at:
Co-op Insurance: we’re working on introducing rewards on our home and car insurance but in the meantime we have member offers available from time to time
Co-op Electrical: offers on selected products and brands, from time to time

Lol - I agree. But as a deal, you can get 5% back on a £1k spend - for a £1 one off payment

I am sure this depends on which Coop Society your local Coop belongs to. Our local one has not paid out in years, the small amount of dividend they pay out all goes to charity.

This scheme is not the dividend, but is a straight reward that will pay out regardless of profit. They will bring back the dividend as well, but they don't expect to make a profit for another year or two. As you say there are local coops that aren't part of this national scheme.

Just joined at my local. I never use my NUS discount as I want to save it for places that can afford it - co-op is local and gives to good causes and now I can get 5% guilt free. Hot from me! Earned 30p just buying bread, snacks and pasta sauce! (Only 70p more to go till break even  )

Coop no longer do bank services - as you will find, the bank you are thinking of is co-operative banking whereas the food store for example is now called the co-op

Although if my local smaller coop is anything to go by, I could save even more by using literally any other shop in my town!

Co op is more expensive than most places, however I find with NUS card and careful selection of deals you can do quite well.
They also reduce items quite regularly and significantly so you can pick up some bargains if you pop in daily and have a look.
Quality is also much better .e.g the wholemeal farmhouse loaf is one of the best I've had and it's 75p before discount.

so basically, the shop you food shop at dictates what you eat, and when (according to thier pricing)

to an extent I would agree, not really suitable for a family I agree... but I have a co op and a morrisons both within 2 minute walk of my workplace. I quite often kill some of my lunch hour having a browse, and will pick up some of the 'orange stickers' for tea that evening.
e.g. the co op 'finest' pizzas are lovely but quite pricey at £4.50 each... often pick them up for half price with orange sticker... same with meat etc

Re: reduced items, the question is surely whether a Co-Op-branded item that is reduced still qualifies for the 5% "reward" or is just treated like all the non-branded items (0% "reward").
Sadly the Co-Op, despite being a local convenience store for most, is literally the furthest store away from me of all the major supermarkets (including Aldi and Lidl), which is the main reason my Co-Op membership card gets so little use. Even the Cooperative Bank has a closer branch to me than Co-Op Food does, which is quite some achievement!

I asked the same question today. all Co-op branded products earn 5% even if discounted, but you get 5% of the discounted rate

I confirm you still earn 5% on reduced co op branded items

The cost of the discount - profiteering corporates mostly. Co-op at least have a charitable and local ethos.
