Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy save the Lylat system in this new deep space dogfighting adventure. Using the Wii U GamePad controller and the TV together creates a unique interface that allows players to experience the game with two different viewpoints within the Arwing – aim and shoot enemies in one direction while flying in another. This frees up the TV for a more cinematic flight experience. Then, pilot the Arwing with its new Walker transformation, along with the new Gyrowing and the Landmaster Tank, to traverse interplanetary terrain.

Different controls, yes, and not especially easy to pick up, but they *do* work - very well - if you're prepared to invest the time into mastering them. Unquestionably they do make the game less approachable, though, yes, and this is what drove the poor sales.
As for length, well, Star Fox is by nature designed for single-player score attack and replays. Have you earned all of the medals?
Sure, it's not for everyone, but there's a very enjoyable game in there if you're prepared to look for it and put in a little effort.

Yes, it's a great game, certainly worth this price. The controls are certainly different and take some getting used to, but if you're prepared to invest some time in doing so, they work very well.

This person's opinion reminds me of a Quake review that maligned the use of mouse and keyboard together. They didn't like it, and factored their feelings into the score. Varying levels of skill are needed for certain games. Starfox Zero is one of those types of game. Simple.

No it's not a great game. It's average, very short, no online multiplayer, no multiplayer full stop, and the game is ruined by the atrocious controls. Worst controls I've ever experienced in a Nintendo game, I mean completely ****ed. There's a reason it's sold so poorly and why so many secondhand copies appeared on shop shelves within a few days of release. Miyamoto probably killed Star Fox for a long time if not permanently with that mess.

Your comments just prove that the controls are awful. Just look at what you wrote, you're trying to be positive but you can't mask the negativity of the game:
"Not for everyone"
"if you're prepared to look for it and put in a little effort"
"Unquestionably they do make the game less approachable"
"if you're prepared to invest the time into mastering them"
"not especially easy to pick up"
And no I've not earned every medal and I've no intention of doing so either. Even getting some of the medals is artificial bloating on an already short game. Making you replay levels with slightly different paths is cheap and lazy.
I'd advise anyone who's thinking about buying this game to try out the demo first. Trust me, the majority of you will run a mile from this game.

I don't imagine that I'm able to convince you - your mind is clearly made up (though your comments about replaying levels suggest that you've somewhat missed the point of this type of game) - my message is simply that people shouldn't write off the game without giving it a chance, as there is a very good game in there.

SFZ could have had simple traditional controls but Nintendo clearly forced Platinum Games to use gimmicky GamePad controls in order to give that big bulky dated controller some use. Nintendo shouldn't have done this but instead make it optional because they can't please both audiences with the same controls.

played the demo. glad I did as it gave me an understanding of everyone's criticisms regarding the controls. definitely not for me - ruins the immersion.

Yup. The demo was released extremely late but at least it's out so people can try it out than buy the game and hate how the controls works.

Cheers SneakyD, I didn't even realise they'd added a demo - downloading right now to try it out before buying.

Demo doesn't really do the game justice - the decision to release it 3 months after the game came out was a mistake - why not let people master the control system in anticipation of the game itself?
Someone who gave up on it early allowed me to bag the ltd box set of both games for £35 a month after release from my local Game store!
