Fox, Falco, Peppy and Slippy save the Lylat system in this new deep space dogfighting adventure. Using the Wii U GamePad controller and the TV together creates a unique interface that allows players to experience the game with two different viewpoints within the Arwing – aim and shoot enemies in one direction while flying in another. This frees up the TV for a more cinematic flight experience. Then, pilot the Arwing with its new Walker transformation, along with the new Gyrowing and the Landmaster Tank, to traverse interplanetary terrain.

Different controls, yes, and not especially easy to pick up, but they *do* work - very well - if you're prepared to invest the time into mastering them. Unquestionably they do make the game less approachable, though, yes, and this is what drove the poor sales.
As for length, well, Star Fox is by nature designed for single-player score attack and replays. Have you earned all of the medals?
Sure, it's not for everyone, but there's a very enjoyable game in there if you're prepared to look for it and put in a little effort.

Yes, it's a great game, certainly worth this price. The controls are certainly different and take some getting used to, but if you're prepared to invest some time in doing so, they work very well.

This person's opinion reminds me of a Quake review that maligned the use of mouse and keyboard together. They didn't like it, and factored their feelings into the score. Varying levels of skill are needed for certain games. Starfox Zero is one of those types of game. Simple.

No it's not a great game. It's average, very short, no online multiplayer, no multiplayer full stop, and the game is ruined by the atrocious controls. Worst controls I've ever experienced in a Nintendo game, I mean completely ****ed. There's a reason it's sold so poorly and why so many secondhand copies appeared on shop shelves within a few days of release. Miyamoto probably killed Star Fox for a long time if not permanently with that mess.

Your comments just prove that the controls are awful. Just look at what you wrote, you're trying to be positive but you can't mask the negativity of the game:
"Not for everyone"
"if you're prepared to look for it and put in a little effort"
"Unquestionably they do make the game less approachable"
"if you're prepared to invest the time into mastering them"
"not especially easy to pick up"
And no I've not earned every medal and I've no intention of doing so either. Even getting some of the medals is artificial bloating on an already short game. Making you replay levels with slightly different paths is cheap and lazy.
I'd advise anyone who's thinking about buying this game to try out the demo first. Trust me, the majority of you will run a mile from this game.

I don't imagine that I'm able to convince you - your mind is clearly made up (though your comments about replaying levels suggest that you've somewhat missed the point of this type of game) - my message is simply that people shouldn't write off the game without giving it a chance, as there is a very good game in there.

SFZ could have had simple traditional controls but Nintendo clearly forced Platinum Games to use gimmicky GamePad controls in order to give that big bulky dated controller some use. Nintendo shouldn't have done this but instead make it optional because they can't please both audiences with the same controls.

Yup. The demo was released extremely late but at least it's out so people can try it out than buy the game and hate how the controls works.

Demo doesn't really do the game justice - the decision to release it 3 months after the game came out was a mistake - why not let people master the control system in anticipation of the game itself?
Someone who gave up on it early allowed me to bag the ltd box set of both games for £35 a month after release from my local Game store!

Cheers. thats the main thing everyone says is the controls!! I think the worse thing is because its connected only to the gamepad, I couldnt play cod on the gamepad with inverted controls for some reason, as to length I agree with medals etc all single player games or a few hours thats why I got into trophy and achievements to get my moneys worth. Nintendo haven't been much of an online thing so wouldnt put me off their one the greatest gamers ever!!

I found the game quite good once used to the controls. Hated the last level though so never finished it.

I completed it. Good game. The controls were no issue. They're unique and had a learning curve, not unlike going from mouse and keyboard to a controller, or vice versa. It takes a little time. As for the gyro controls and how they handle. It's similar to Splatoon in implementation. I adjusted to both rather quickly.
The sticking point is having to continually look between the GamePad and the TV. That breaks the immersion and can stall your momentum. That, for me, is the real bump in the road. It is possible to press select (-) to swap views on the TV. No more need to look down at the GamePad!
It's definitely not for everyone. People wanted an HD Star Fox 64 and this is not it. Worth a look at the right price for those looking for something different. Innovation is important but it doesn't always strike gold.

Heat added, still too expensive for me. Lol
I'll wait.
When people say it's short, exactly how many levels we talking here?
If there's as many as SF64, I'd be happy with that.
Not a big universe by any stretch but at least comprehensive differences between worlds.
People moaning about controls, seriously? Stick to what you know; don't try anything new.
Can't imagine how many people hated Turok 64 because they couldn't adjust to new style of control and missed out on a genuinely great experience.

12 main stages, most of which are much longer than those of Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars, plus 8 shorter variant stages, unlocked by meeting certain conditions. For comparison, Lylat Wars has 15 stages (16 if you count the two variants of Venom separately).

Would be great if they would offer the choice of classic control scheme and the newer one. Would be a relatively easy update and would make a lot of people happier
Thinking about this... Imagine if they released that as DLC :stuck_out_tongue:

Not a hope will there be any DLC or a patch with normal controls. Nintendo have washed their hands of this game. They also said before the games release that they were looking into adding online multiplayer post release. That was a lie. They never had any intention of doing so, it was just a trick to try and get more people to buy the game.

That'd be more like a Title Patch or Update than a "DLC". I bet Platinum Games' has the traditional controls' ready for the game but won't release as mandated by Nintendo.

There's a new control scheme. There are new vehicles. It has a dual screen setup. I get what you're implying, but it's more than simply a tweaked control input that separates the two.
I'm not sure how levels and bosses may differ as I only dabbled with 64.
