No, RX480 performs about the same at the moment and that's for the reference version which throttles.

(the Max setting is them setting the card to a higher fan)

The reason AMD 'resides' in the xbox 1 and PS4 is because NVIDIA didn't want that low value contract. The margins were very slim.

I just don't see how you can make the assumption the Vega will be a showstopper. AMD haven't released a card that has lived up to it's hype in a VERY long time.

The 3xx series was hugely disappointing, the 480 was a flop out the game, and the Fury/Fury X have been an afterthought.

Also, the 7990 was released April 2013, the 290x was released October 2013.

oh i disagree.... you could argue that at the point of sale their last 'killer' card was the 7990 as at the point of release it was the best pound/performance card of its kind. yes it was far superceeded by the nvidia ti but that nvidia was not there at release of the the 7990

The 480 already hits the performance mark at its price point but is and has always been a filler card for the vega which is next due. And due to the architecture change in the vega, that is set to be the next killer card with HBM 2 which will surely be beaten by the Nvidia 1080ti and next titanesque.... But thus we delve into the murky world of GPU's and their marketing strategies even further....

Vulkan and DX12 definitely helping performance over Nvidia in games that utilise it properly, not that many that do, but Doom and Rise of the Tomb Raider bench around the same as a GTX980 when using an RX480.

Not bashing this deal but I think you'd be much better off scoring a 2nd hand GTX 970 for £160/70 or a gtx 980 for about £210

Yeah, I really want one! Wish it was coming out now but by the sounds of it we might have to wait a year before its available. I could wait a few months, possibly even to January, but a year is too long. Hence the second R390... not ideal but hey ho it'll tide me over and then I can sell it so it only sets me back £100 really.

480 was a rushed card because Vega is not ready.

​Haha, yeah, I know..... I'm really pushing it too with a 750w PSU. There's space on the side of my case for another fan by the GPUs so I think the heat will be fine. But would be a pain to have to invest again in a bigger PSU. Well, nothing ventured..... just wish Vega wasn't so far away.

R9 290 runs Battlefield 1 really well at 1080 on ultra settings. Uses about 3.8GB vram so this 8GB card would be slightly better.

About 100W more than the RX 480 - LINK.
