Tried my NUS card but it didn't verify me (no idea why as it's worked elsewhere, including Amazon). So called MS for help and they verified me over the phone. I also got a four year deal at £59.99 which is better than this £29.99 for one year.

I wouldn't trust MS and there free online storage, they offered windows phone users cloud storage and then drastically reduced it so much that users will lose data (photos etc)

No. They didn't.
a) They stopped you adding to it. Your stuff was still there
b) They later gave you the option of opting in to keep the space.
c) That was a freebie whereas you're paying for this.

Does it stop working after 12 months or do you still have the Office applications to use (just no online storage) ??

Not 100% correct. If you are a student you could get Office 365 University - this is valid for 4 years.
