not being sarcastic but what is the point of dishwasher salt as I've had a dishwasher for years and never used it, please advise

You need it in hard water areas and yes you really do need it, if you need it, if you see what I mean,

The salt softens the water. Without salt, you would start to get limescale deposits in the workings of your dishwasher which would make it work less well and ultimately kill it. All-in-one dishwasher tabs - most of them - contain salt, so in theory, you shouldn't need to add salt. In practice, it's best to do so, especially in hard water areas.
Oh - and the deal. Cold: Aldi have 2kg for 99p from 21 July while stocks last. Plus 100-pack of their best buy tabs for £7.79, dishwasher cleaner and rinse aid.
