This is a data-only sim, and needs to be used in a tablet, usb dongle or mifi.
It does however come pre-enabled for Three's "Feel at Home" (free roaming in 19 countries.)

Yes it can and, as data sim, it is designed for tethering (I called 3G and they confirmed it)

Please excuse my stunning naivety and if this has been answered before (but a search got me nothing). If I was to get this, put it in my iPhone, register it and then use it abroad, would it be fine for Google maps, browsing, whatsapp, etc? It would just be no good for phone and texts I'm guessing (which would be fine by me anyway). You don't have to use it in a tablet or mifi?

Yes, you can even using your phone for tethering if needed/supported. Whatsapp however will be linked to the phone number of the sim (although you can't make calls/text it has a number linked to it and you will need to get whatsapp for this number)
