No, the torch wasn't on any of the weapons - you had to switch to it to use it, which meant putting all weapons away, although the torch could be used as a melee weapon. It was supposed to be realistic but many people found it frustrating (and so it became one of the biggest debates in gaming history!). The duct tape mod was quickly made on the assumption that there must be a role of duct tape somewhere in a base on Mars and that any marine worth his salt would have the good sense to tape his torch to his gun instead of switching between them. It enables you to attach the torch to the shotgun and machine gun (the mod maker elected not to enable it for the pistol so as not to spoil the early sections of the game).

In the BFG edition there is now a torch attached to your armour, so you can use it whilst wielding a weapon for a limited time before having to let the battery recharge (so like most other games with a torch). In my opinion, this doesn't ruin the atmosphere of the game at all - it's still mostly dark, things still jump out at you a lot, and with the torch running out of battery so quickly you'll mostly be using it to double check the corners for health and ammo. If you don't like using it, you can just leave it off. If you do, it's far less frustrating than it was originally. Although I don't see why they didn't include the original flashlight as a separate weapon as well - that would have been the best solution!

Torch aside, though, the BFG edition does seem to be a bit brighter when you look at comparisons to the original - but then it could be argued that the original was too dark in places. But apparently there was a patch to the BFG edition that tweaked the brightness settings so any comparison shots you see may no longer be accurate as they were probably made when it was first released. And you can always turn the brightness down yourself!


It's also worth mentioning that, as well as all of the technical improvements, the BFG also comes with the Lost Missions - extra levels not available anywhere else - and also includes Ultimate Doom and Doom II, which are based on the versions that were released on Xbox Live Arcade, which gives certain advantages such as being able to run them at desktop resolution with smoother textures, better keyboard/mouse controls, controller support, Steam achievements and the Doom II expansion pack, No Rest for The Living, that was made for XBLA.

remember one of the most tense thing about this game was that you couldn't see anything but tiny bit of torch for most of the game....didn't they totally change the game for this edition and the tension was totally lost?

The torch was on on some of the weaker weapons in the original game. But there were mods of course that would allow you to add it to all weapons anyway if you so chose to do so.
