tempted to buy this and throw it in an old PC i have lying around in order to give to my grandparents in the future. Anyone used this CPU for normal browsing etc?

like all mini itxs', i struggle to find a decent cheap case to justify any cheap m-itx that i find.

Because its not worth the hassle when you quickly realise it's not powerful enough to be useful as an HTPC, and mini itx builds are not the easiest to disassemble and change out parts. I'd recommend a decent motherboard for not much more that will last longer and allow a much better CPU to be fitted.

Nothing to do with my needs as I don't need one. Its not much of a deal when you think about practically. Might be ok for browsing but that's it. I wouldn't get too upset, you're not even the OP.

Yes, that's because the i3 is faster so it's normal for your old laptop to not feel as snappy, and the benchmarks on that site clearly show this:

Interesting. I'd need to buy some ram thuogh. I have some hard drives lying around that I could use, so wouldn't it be easier for me to just buy a PSU + a cheap mini ITX case + some ram rather than trying to savage parts from old computers.

Any suggestions on cheap deals on those respective parts?

Also I have a mitx with the J1900 chip, which in cpuboss shows little difference.
On that fact go and read these these reviews on Amazon of a J1900 chip mitx board: 'Asrock Mod CEL ASRock Q1900DC-ITX' Just becuase it's a dual core celeron doesn't mean it isn't good for a htpc.

I said its not powerful enough to be useful as an HTPC, not that it can't be used as one at all. Depends what you use yours for. HD. 4k, light gaming (e.g. MK or Bioshock). I wouldn't name-call or lose sleep over it :wink:

It is somewhere in the range of a Core 2 E4300. I had one of these chips in a tertiary windows 7 machine a few years ago and then gave it away to someone using it for just browsing and basic stuff, great thing for the job required. I think said CPU only came out in about 2007, and it was one of the best budget chips around.

It's amazing to think this is pretty much equivalent performance. Ok, 8 years is quite a long time in the world of PC technology, but I would imagine if you paired this with at least 4GB of RAM and a small SSD it would be more than adequate to browse the internet and do low level tasks.

The key with this sort of system is to use an SSD. If you use a mechanical drive then the machine feels horribly slower than it could be. Considering there are now half decent 120GB SSDs for like £30 there is no excuse.

I bought the Gigabyte J1800 board a while ago, built a mini-PC with a SO-DIMM ram deal from Amazon, a cheap knock-off PicoPSU from China, and an old SSD I had running spare and put it in one of these cases. The case isn't the best looking but it has a small footprint and is easy to work with. I just bought an Intel Wifi/Bluetooth card for it as well.

I have had this running as a file server, with windows 10, for the last 18 months+... It's great for this job... I have a couple raspberry pi as media players (kodi) and the kodi WOL feature for it works great... the server wakes from sleep and is ready to stream within 2 seconds.

Yep you have no idea. For me a media pc would be able to handle Blu-ray rips, kodi, Netflix, Spotify and web browsing. Which this can handle perfectly while being silent and using very little power.

For me, my media PC needs to do more. Like I said, it depends on what you want. Just saying not to expect too much from this CPU. Funny how wound up people get from an honest comment. Saying I have no clue when in fact you have no clue about what I know or don't know says it all :smiley:

Make a great NAS or mini server box. You can get a case plus psu for under £30 quid.

It has a PCI express slot; you could add a couple of extra ports for about a fiver

The only ones ITX systems I have ever owned (or rather I bought for work) have been rackmount ones but I'd suggest having a look at these places:

I can't remember what RAM I got but it was 8GB SO-DIMM DDR3 from Amazon (well, Flubit or Bespoke Offers using the Amazon price), and reused an old SSD.

Just wanted to add, I recently bought these two items to add Wifi (and Bluetooth) to my above setup, I do NOT recommend this pair of items together. I do not know if it is the card or the antennas but without the antennas attached there is no wifi signal at all, with them attached it is very bad, I pick up a neighbours wifi with maybe two bars, but mine which is in the next room is sporadically found at one bar strength, my laptop and other PCs tested in the same location get a full or near full signal.

Intel 7260HMW BN - note there are also better cards in the Intel 7260HMW series, but I would have expected performance from this card to be adequate

It's because the general defintion of a "media PC" is not one that game, it is one that can play and stream HD/4k media. Your definition appears to be different to the rest of the world.

Out of stock now. I had a chat with them and they apparently aren't going to stock them in the future. I'm gutted I've missed them but instead I went for cheapest AMD motherboard form eBay plus A4 with fan for £20 from eBay (new) so I got nice set for £43 (much better performance but £20 more expensive)
