Not sure why chapchap said that but this game can ONLY be played through Steam. These days it's very rare to find a retail copy of a game that doesn't require some kind of online DRM activation, and that will mean Steam unless it's from a publisher that has their own (EA/Origin, Ubisoft/UPlay, Blizzard/Battle.net, Rockstar/Social Club, etc.). So there will be a code printed somewhere in the retail case that you need to activate on Steam - the discs are just there to install the game from to save you downloading it.
So if a game is on that list, it will require activation on Steam even if you buy a disc copy.
Reviews are/were generally positive for the game itself (great concept, good graphics, good level design, etc.). The main problem is that it never really became very popular and, considering it's multiplayer only, that kind of cripples it, with not many people playing. But hey, if it's only £2.50 or goes F2P maybe that will change! I think I'll take a punt at this price.

If you're ever unsure, there's this list on Wikipedia of games that require Steam -

So if a game is on that list, it will require activation on Steam even if you buy a disc copy.
