If you're using this as a primary source of backup, even if it was brand new, you're a complete moron.
Off site backup or nothing.

Recertified is just a posh word for SECOND HAND and would you really trust your family photos and videos on a drive that has been used for ???? hours? I certainly WOULD NOT. But not voted either way because it is a personal choice.

Price is good but I would not bank on getting the drive anytime soon. I waited 12 days and it still was not dispatched. Cancelled in the end although they could not guarantee it would not still arrive and that i would be charged!

Two remarks. WD is a pretty horrible online shop. For me, never again, whatever the offer: twice bitten, thrice shy:-)
Second, HDs are fickle at the best of times. I have a 512MB (yes, MB) Maxtor from 1996 which still works (I keep it to show people how noisy these things used to be). I've also seen practically new drives go up in metaphorical smoke.
So how anyone can buy a 2nd hand drive and then put 1TB of presumably valuable personal data on it... just for the sake of a few pounds is utterly beyond me.

Why would you put any valuable files at all on a single mechanical disk? Regardless of origin.
Use Backblaze or something if you actually care about the data.
This is still useful for moving data around etc. And I've still voted hot, I just find is insane that people **** off refurbished hard disks when new ones are just as bad.

I like how everyone is predicting the failure of these drives. If anyone puts all their personal files on ONE drive and expects it to last forever just because it's a brand new drive, then you're a fool. Make multiple backups and don't trust anything. Any drive will fail, you won't know when it does it, so you need multiple backups.

Yes, all hard drives are destined to fail at some point, but a second hand one is destined to fail that bit sooner. It's not rocket science.

Not at all.
As a source of backup only then you are not going to be using the drive for long periods and therefore the life expectancy will be very long.
