If you're using this as a primary source of backup, even if it was brand new, you're a complete moron.
Off site backup or nothing.

So mine came today. Nice box. All sealed. All wrapped up. Looked perfect and works like a dream. I'm going to be honest I couldn't tell it was recertified. Just my opinion but looks and works fine for me

I've bought about a dozen from this outlet and never had an issue. Just saying.

Same as everyone else, ordered and was never delivered. Took 3 emails and about a month to get a refund.

The way I see it - Its not from Ebay its from WD - I doubt that if they were that bad they would be that popular (the 500mb version for £25 is always selling out) Its still a good brand not a Tescos own. Granted you could buy the new version, but its £49.99 from most places. I wouldnt suggest anyone use this day in day out without any other backup but for me to just use now and again I think its a great price. If it comes and it looks bashed or dodgy you can just send it back as stated on their site. Mine came and looks like new and works perfect. They wouldnt have a shop selling these if all of them broke in the first months etc

Yes, all hard drives are destined to fail at some point, but a second hand one is destined to fail that bit sooner. It's not rocket science.

Anyone bought and used the Dropbox backup option that's included - or know a good program for backing up to Dropbox (wife's work files).

A program for backing up to Dropbox? What, like Dropbox? The program you install on your computer?!

I bought this hdd last 2 weeks and seems good to me,
Condition new. Not even a single sign of usage.
It seems to work fine with me, it is like new and you will never tell if its recertified, however it has a little sticker on the back to confirm that; "recertified in vietnam"

Ordered one last week to playback media on sony home theatre and it works great (i did have to format to fat32 first so it would read). Excellent price if you want to store unimportant files

Bought one of these for my sons Xbox One a while ago. Works well and the data's not important anyway.
Even so I imagine this is no more likely to fail than a new one. I've had new ones fail within weeks, this one's lasted longer than that already.

Not at all.
As a source of backup only then you are not going to be using the drive for long periods and therefore the life expectancy will be very long.

I like how everyone is predicting the failure of these drives. If anyone puts all their personal files on ONE drive and expects it to last forever just because it's a brand new drive, then you're a fool. Make multiple backups and don't trust anything. Any drive will fail, you won't know when it does it, so you need multiple backups.

Two remarks. WD is a pretty horrible online shop. For me, never again, whatever the offer: twice bitten, thrice shy:-)
Second, HDs are fickle at the best of times. I have a 512MB (yes, MB) Maxtor from 1996 which still works (I keep it to show people how noisy these things used to be). I've also seen practically new drives go up in metaphorical smoke.
So how anyone can buy a 2nd hand drive and then put 1TB of presumably valuable personal data on it... just for the sake of a few pounds is utterly beyond me.

Why would you put any valuable files at all on a single mechanical disk? Regardless of origin.
Use Backblaze or something if you actually care about the data.
This is still useful for moving data around etc. And I've still voted hot, I just find is insane that people **** off refurbished hard disks when new ones are just as bad.

Recertified is just a posh word for SECOND HAND and would you really trust your family photos and videos on a drive that has been used for ???? hours? I certainly WOULD NOT. But not voted either way because it is a personal choice.

Price is good but I would not bank on getting the drive anytime soon. I waited 12 days and it still was not dispatched. Cancelled in the end although they could not guarantee it would not still arrive and that i would be charged!
